Home Wine Kitchen Celebrates Three-Year Anniversary with One-Time-Only Menu

Home Wine Kitchen (7322 Manchester Road, Maplewood; 314-802-7676) amazingly (and somewhat frustratingly) changes its menu every week. If you liked something, too bad -- it's gone. Except for one week of the year. For the third year in a row, chef Cassy Vires and her husband and business partner Josh Renbarger are bringing back their greatest hits for anniversary week.
"We sort of crowdsourced throughout the year. A lot of it is people saying/ 'Please, please, please bring this dish back,'" Renbarger tells us. "Cassy sits down and pares them into a cohesive menu that reflects the year. It's a fun process -- it's fun for us to see as the year goes on and at the end of the year, what dishes really grab people."
Revived dishes include a bay-scallop appetizer seasoned with gin, a lamb shank, mac & cheese, fried chicken livers and herb salad. Renbarger says it's an interesting mix of wintry and summery dishes.
"I always tell people: We never repeat any dishes throughout the year," he says, "and this is the one week where I make myself a liar. It's a real variety."
Anniversary week begins today, Wednesday, June 18, and ends Sunday, June 22. And then, sadly, the dishes are gone again, forever. The celebration is bittersweet for Vires and Renbarger, who are commemorating three years at Home Wine Kitchen but had to close their other restaurant, Table, just a few months ago.
"It was hard for us emotionally to pull the trigger on closing Table, but it was something that really had to be done. It's still sad for us, but it feels good to be home," Renbarger says. "Home Wine Kitchen has been our home for three years, so it feels good to be able to really focus on that."
