Last week Gut Check readers voted for the most underrated veggie burger in St. Louis. We got a ton of write-ins, too -- more than the number of nominations we originally received. But the veggie burger we'll be checking out next is the "Jane Says" at Layla (4317 Manchester Avenue; 314-553-9252).

There are several burgers on the menu at the recently relaunched restaurant. Owner Jason Sparks bought Layla in 2013 when it was a Lebanese restaurant and changed the menu somewhat to match its signage: burgers, shawarma, shakes.

"Honestly, I always really wanted to do a burger joint, but at the same time I really liked a lot of those items that were on the menu of the original restaurant," Sparks told us in July, "and since I kept the name, I wanted to keep some of those items. I think we have the best falafel in town, the best hummus in town. It's all made from scratch."

The "Jane Says" is a lentil patty topped with Monterey jack, smokey mango sauce, lemon-garlic mayo, flash-fried kale, tomato and sumac onions on a brioche bun, served with a side of fries, tabbouleh, batata, a seasonal vegetable, or hummus and pita.

The top write-in was SweetArt (2203 South 39th Street; 314-771-4278), which is known for its SweetBurger made with onions, carrots, lentils and nuts, among other things, and served on a toasted wheat bun, with mixed greens, tomato, ketchup and SweetArt's housemade vegan spread.

Here's the full report:

Layla (4317 Manchester Avenue; 314-553-9252): 40.76 percent
Stacked Burger Bar (7637 Ivory Avenue; 314-655-4900): 27.01 percent
Other: 20.01 percent
Baileys' Range (920 Olive Street; 314-241-8121): 11.37 percent

Cheyenne Cox, for the next time you are in town. St. Louis has too many good veggie options to not try them all.
