The Wheelhouse Downtown, Ices Plain & Fancy Squeeze in July Openings

Two pretty exciting openings squeezed in at the end of July: the second location for Wheelhouse (1000 Spruce Street; 314-833-3653) and specialty ice-cream shop Ices Plain & Fancy (2256 South 39th Street; 314-601-3604). Get the scoop after the jump.

Wheelhouse's original location opened in Clayton last year and quickly became our favorite spot to watch Mizzou games. The new space downtown in the Cupples 8 building is a whopping 10,000 square feet and was designed by SPACE Architects (the firm behind the Good Pie, Pi Pizzeria, Niche, Mission Taco, Pastaria, Franco and more). Wheelhouse opened July 30 for food service and got its liquor license a few days later. The bar is approved to stay open until 3 a.m., but can't serve liquor that late until it does $150,000 in sales (bummer, but stay tuned).

Ices Plain & Fancy also had a very sneaky (read: unannounced) soft opening July 27 followed by its official opening July 30. The ice-cream shop uses liquid nitrogen to make its ice cream. Although that sounds futuristic, it's actually been around since the 19th century.

"[It] gives it a really unique consistency and allows us a tremendous amount of freedom to explore and experiment with flavors and ingredients," co-owner Troika Brodsky told us back in May. "There really isn't currently anything like it in our neck of the woods. We think folks are really going to dig it."

Ices Plain & Fancy is closed Monday and Tuesday and open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
