Winter refuses to just back off, and it's to the point where we all just need a little hope, a glimmer of spring. Schlafly's (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-2337) American IPA (AIPA) is exactly that, a blessed bridge carrying beer drinkers toward warmer days and biergarten drinking. Seeking our own antidote to the bitter winds, we sought out a six-pack of this terrific beer.

This is the beer that brings all the hopheads to the yard. The reviews for "Hopslam Ale" on Beer Advocate read like love letters. There's so much hype every year surrounding this release that you have to wonder if this is really the one beer to rule them all. And maybe there is an element of overinflation here, but still it's impossible to deny that for those who crave hops, this beer is one of the best of the best.

Though the holiday season is behind us, winter is most definitely sticking around -- as evidenced by snowstorms and ungodly low temperatures. What we need is a good strong beer that can stand up to the cold and be enjoyed by the fire. Our choice this week is Southern Tier's "Choklat," a stout with a sweeter side. Read on for our review.
