Watch the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Busch in All Its Disgusting Glory

Appetizing, right? | Jon Gitchoff

It's Memorial Day, so we (and probably you guys, too) are going to be eating more than our fair share of delicious, all-American hot dogs (which were first introduced right here in St. Louis in 1904, no less). Naturally, America is all about bigger and better, so the gluttonous Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest is about as American as you can get. We were on location last weekend at Busch Stadium for the regional competition. Watch interviews with winner Sean "Flash" Gordon" and runner up Eric "Badlands" Booker as well as some serious face-stuffing. Happy Memorial Day, ya'll!

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at Busch Stadium Declares a Winner

Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs. | Jon Gitchoff

The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is iconic, just like its titular dog and its birthplace, Coney Island. But instead of a delicious wiener after a day on the boardwalk, hot dog eating is serious business. The annual contest, which began in 1916, takes place on Coney Island on the Fourth of July, but Nathan's held a qualifying round right here in St. Louis this weekend at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis Pancake Bowl: A Champion is Crowned at St. Peters IHOP Location

Categories: Contests!

The contenders. | Jon Gitchoff

Forget wings -- for some this Super Bowl weekend, it was all about pancakes. On Saturday, competitive eaters gathered at International House of Pancakes locations around the country for the first ever Pancake Bowl. St. Louis was no exception.

An eclectic crowd of men -- some bearded, some wearing cut-off t-shirts -- descended on the St. Peters location, each one hoping to win the title of regional pancake eating champion. Some qualified by holding records at other IHOP locations. Mounds of butter and pools of syrup were served as the towers of pancakes toppled. Truly an epic competition, it all came down to the final seconds and the final pancake.

It was clear from our most recent "Most Underrated Sandwich Shop" poll that Gut Check readers are very opinionated when it comes to what makes a great sandwich. Help Schlafly Win $5,000 for a Local Charity in National Craft Brewery Contest

Categories: Beer, Contests!

The folks at New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado, recently devised a little pumpkin-carving contest with the dual purpose of helping craft brewers to promote their seasonal pumpkin beer and help a worthy charity. The rules: Carve a pumpkin, send a photo of it with the pumpkin beer and let fans vote on the national food blog Eater. First prize is $5,000 for a charity of the winning brewer's choice.

Schlafly's Troika Brodsky actually went to Clayton High School with New Belgium's social-media manager, so St. Louis' biggest craft brewery jumped in to face New Belgium, Brooklyn Brewery, Dogfish Head, Jolly Pumpkin, Cambridge Brewing, Saint Arnold and Cigar City. After lagging behind for most of the contest, as of Monday night, Schlafly edged into the lead.

"I've had some people say our pumpkin's not the best," Brodsky tells Gut Check. "For us, sure -- it's OK if you like another pumpkin more, or another beer more. We're just asking our St. Louis fans to vote for St. Louis."

And today is your last chance.
