Boy Bites Into Human Finger at Arby's

Categories: Contests!, WTF?

Cannibalism! It's good mood food.
Gut Check can attest from our personal experience that meat slicers are bloodthirsty machines not to be trifled with. (Next time you see us in public, ask to see the scar from our close encounter with a representative of the species in an Ocean City, Maryland, deli circa 1997.) So we weren't at all surprised to learn that a meat slicer was responsible for this week's gross-out restaurant story at a Jackson, Michigan, Arby's, as reported by the Jackson Citizen-Patriot:

A 14-year-old boy who had visited the [Arby's] drive-through window with his mother was eating the sandwich and pulled a pad of a finger out of his mouth, Jackson police Deputy Chief John Holda said. He described it as the fingerprint portion.

(That "fingerprint portion" detail is just perfect, isn't it?)

The boy and his mother brought the finger into the Arby's, where the manager told them to be quiet, lest every other customer demand some.

KIDDING.

Eric Schlosser has taken on a variety of writing subjects in his time, from illegal immigration to marijuana to pornography, but he's best known for his sharp criticism of the fast food industry in his 2002 book Fast Food Nation. A proponent of the slow food movement, Schlosser tours the country several weeks a year to speak at colleges about sourcing fresh food locally. Next week, Schlosser will visit the metro area to participate in two events: a dinner at Farmhaus (3257 Ivanhoe Avenue; 314-647-3800) prepared by Josh Galliano and hosted by Slow Food STL, as well as a speaking engagement on April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts at McKendree University (701 College Road Lebanon, Illinois; 618-537-4481). The talk is tentatively titled "Why you need to know what you're eating." Gut Check was able to catch up with the writer to discuss his new writing projects, dodging bad food in college towns and what moves he'd make if he ran the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Click through for an opportunity to win tickets to Schlosser's speaking event at McKendree University.

Gooey Butter Cake from Gooey Louie, Review + Giveaway [Updated]

gooey louis drivin me nuts full photo-resized.jpg
Rease Kirchner
The "Hwy 40: Still Drivin' Me Nuts!" gooey butter cake at Gooey Louie.
The native St. Louis treat gooey butter cake is rich and indulgent, but what magic creates the signature sweet? Apparently it's not magic at all, or at least not totally. Traditional gooey butter cake is made with cake flour, butter and eggs covered in powdered sugar. History goes that it was originally meant to be served as a breakfast pastry or coffee cake instead of a serious dessert, because that's how every morning should start: With a lump of sugar. Nowadays, St. Louisians eat gooey butter cake pretty much whenever they can get their soon-to-be sticky hands on it. While you can find this gooey delicacy in many places around town, it is unlikely that anything will compare to the quality and variety available at Gooey Louie (6483 Chippewa Street; 314-352-2253) and (14628 Manchester; 636-527-5600). Though Gut Check enjoys us some gooey butter cake, we are insufferably picky, and not always fans of it. One trip to Gooey Louie confirmed our love affair was strong as ever, though.
