Into Gut Check's e-mailbox popped an announcement from Taste (4584 Laclede Avenue; 314-361-1200), inviting us to a spur-of-the-moment happy hour guest-bartended by visiting mixologists Phoebe Esmon and Christian R. Gaal.

Truth be told, it doesn't take a carpetbagging cocktail shaker to lure Gut Check to a bar (any bar, let alone Taste, where it's only a matter of time till Ted Kilgore names a gimlet after us (or bans us for life). But after skimming Esmon's and Gaal's planned drink list for the (5-10 p.m.) event, we were persistently messaging Kilgore for details.
"This is the first time we have done this," Taste's bar master responds via e-mail. "Just so happend that Phoebe and Christian were in KC and we decided to have a little fun while they are here."
Kilgore explains that Esmon and Gaal, who are based in Philadelphia and engaged to be married, are old industry friends.
"They are working for tip-share," he says. "The idea is to share information an get a glimpse of what is going on in other cities."
As for that glimpse, pick your poison:
By now, you've probably heard of Purus Vodka. The hometown booze has generated lots of buzz, including a hat tip from Wine Enthusiast, when the magazine named it a "Top Spirit" last year. We chatted with John Giarrante, president of Pure Holdings LLC, back in July, and he discussed the brand's plans for vastly expanding its distribution.
Well, now you can stop reading about Purus and experience it as it's meant to be experienced -- goin' down the ol hatch.
Purus will host a Happy Hour debut party from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at Tucci & Fresta's (15 North Central Avenue, Clayton; 314-725-6588). "Happy" seems like a bit of an understatement, though, considering these drinks are complimentary. (Well, one free Purus vodka cocktail per customer of legal age.)
Use the free drink as an excuse to check out Tucci & Fresta's, the new Clayton trattoria and bar residing in Portabella's old space.
