Is Blueberry Hill's World Series "Gateway Grille" Special the Most St. Louis-tastic Sandwich Possible? (No)

By this point, I've become numb to the inundation of press releases, advertisements and tweets for World Series-, Cardinals- and -- above all else -- Rally Squirrel-themed specials, so my eyes glazed over even before I opened the e-mail from Delmar Loop institution Blueberry Hill (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-4444) with the subject "Blueberry Hill's World Series Sandwich."

And then I read the description of this limited-time World Series special, the "Gateway Grille": a grilled-cheese sandwich made with Provel and stuffed with toasted ravioli. My torpor shaken, I cleared my lunch schedule and headed down the street from Gut Check International Headquarters to try this emblem of St. Louis cuisine.

What's it like? It's exactly what you think a grilled cheese sandwich made with Provel and stuffed with toasted ravioli would be like -- especially if you think a grilled cheese sandwich made with Provel and stuffed with toasted ravioli would be terrible.

It's very crunchy.

Frankly, though, what disappointed me about the "Gateway Grille" was the fact that it didn't offer more tributes to St. Louis food traditions. After the jump, the top five ways that we could make this sandwich even more St. Louis-tastic.

You Say Tomato, I Say Bullshit: The Reckoning

Last week, I showed you the alleged tomato that I was served at a local restaurant. Today, the review of this restaurant is published, and I can reveal the culprit: PW Pizza (2017 Chouteau Avenue; 314-241-7799). The terrible tomato is especially galling because PW Pizza is, as my review makes clear, a good restaurant.

Here, from Jennifer Silverberg's slideshow of the restaurant, is a photo of these tomatoes in their natural element:

A Root Beer Floater at Chill

"Root Beer Float" frozen yogurt at Chill
The RFT likes Chill (7610 Wydown Road, Clayton; 314-932-5010). Honest we do. We named it "Best Frozen Yogurt" last year, and we take our Best of St. Louis issue almost as seriously as we do our unsolicited parenting advice.

But, man oh man, the "Root Beer Float" flavor currently on tap (on nozzle?) there is, without an iota of doubt, one of the worst of desserts I've ever tried. And I say this as someone who actually likes the fake flavor you find in those barrels and other "root beer" candies.

Maybe it has something to do with the tartness of the yogurt, but the flavor of this "root beer float" has a bitter, medicinal quality that nothing from the toppings bar could have salvaged. Avoid!

Tied in Knots by Gus' Pretzels

It only looks like these pretzels from Gus' are giving the camera the finger.
I feel like I need to put a question mark after the "Good Restaurants" part of the category title. Is a visit to Gus' Pretzels always this disappointing?

No Extra Credit for the Pomegranate Concrete at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard

John Rooney lied to you.
Welcome to When Bad Dishes Happen to Good Restaurants, in which Gut Check writers, their hearts heavy, note when favorite local establishments have gone astray.

If you listen to Cardinals broadcasts on KTRS, the Big 550, you've probably heard Mike Shannon and John Rooney exhorting you between pitches to try the new "Pomegranate Concrete" at St. Louis institution Ted Drewes Frozen Custard.

Come to think of it, I can recall only Rooney doing the spots. At any rate, Rooney calls the new flavor "refreshing" and ends with the classic Ted Drewes tagline: "It really is good, guys." (Unnecessary pause.) "And gals."

No. No, it's not.
