This weekend's entertainment is a tale of opposites - short plays and towering monsters, psychedelic pop and underground emcees, art from prison inmates and musicals from Broadway stars. Let's see what we've got.

Memphis Pencils (Friday)
Reviewer Roy Kasten described the Memphis Pencils sound as "Sufjan Stevens filtered through the Mountain Goats' boom box and remixed with Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 playing in the background." The psychedelic popsters take their act to Foam on Friday at 9 for a free show.

common (1).jpg
With Common kicking off this summer's free downtown concert series and an abundance of other cheap shows around town on Friday night, concertgoers are going to have some tough decisions to make.

Elsewhere in our weird and wonderful city, we've got grassroots art, a Bastille Day party, impressionist ballet, and a spelling bee for adults. On Saturday the local roller derby league holds its championship match, and condiment-lovers can celebrate the World's Largest Catsup Bottle Festival on Sunday.

Common (Friday)
The Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concert Series kicks off this weekend with Common on Friday and Slightly Stoopid on Saturday. Common, who put out his first album nearly 20 years ago, is most well-known for his song "I Used to Love H.E.R." a scathing indictment of West-Coast rap. The show is under the Arch at 8 p.m. and free. Read our full preview. To see who else will be performing this summer, check here.

It's America's birthday on Sunday, and you know St. Louisans are going to celebrate hard. But if you're not sure what to do this weekend, just walk under the Arch on Saturday morning and stay there. You'll catch Fair St. Louis and performances by John Legend and the B-52s. Across town, there are all kinds of other shows, including the most American act of all: Clownvis. There's lots of patriotic parties going on, and now that the US is out of the World Cup, we can return our focus to our other favorite fringe sport - MMA - and its championship bout on Saturday.

We're all in this together, people. See more photos from 2009 PrideFest. Read Paul Friswold's excellent write-up of PrideFest this year.
Certainly the largest parties this weekend will revolve around PrideFest near Tower Grove Park, but St. Louis has enough Zombie flicks, rock 'n' roll, and something called a "Bizarre Bazaar" to keep everyone happy (and out of the poorhouse). Here's our list of weekend entertainment options that will cost you $10 or less. If you're looking for more live music, here's the St. Louis weekend concert calendar.
