Just what the subject heading says. Nate Drexler of Jumbling Towers is also helping book this venue, but other pertinent details are below.

Name of establishment:
2 Cents Plain

Address:
1114 Olive Street

Who are you, and what is your title within the venue/company?
My name is Corey Cullum. My brother Brandon and I grew up in Saint Louis. Brandon and I co-own 2 Cents Plain.

What is 2 Cents Plain exactly?
2 Cents Plain is downtown’s newest music venue. When we were scouting out the perfect location, we came across the 2 Cents Plain building. The building itself was exactly what we were looking for. We were naturally curious what the sign on the building meant. Upon further investigation we learned that during the great depression, the phrase “2 Cents Plain” referred to a customer that did not have enough cash to fork out for a soda with syrup. They would order a “2 Cents Plain” which translates into a seltzer drink that cost two cents. We loved the name and decided to go with it.

How long has this idea been in the works?
Growing up in Saint Louis, we have always wanted to be part of the growing music scene in St. Louis. We were frustrated with the lack of choices to hear good local bands at the few venues in town. The idea has been there for quite some time, but started becoming a real possibility within the past six months.

How did it come about?
We are very excited about the concept of a new scene in town. It has been a real struggle due to our young age and lack of funds. We decided that we were not going to let anything get in our way. We basically sold everything we owned to finance this project. (We even sold our cars.) We have had a lot of people tell us we couldn't make it work. It was difficult to make the older generation take us seriously. After much hard work and never giving up our vision is becoming a reality.

When is your projected opening date?
The open house is planned for August 17, 2007. The grand opening is scheduled for September 7, 2007.

What do you like about the location of the venue?
Our location is convienately located downtown. It's minutes away from the Edward Jones Dome, the Arch, and Busch Stadium. Everything is going on in the loft district. We are right in the middle of it, just two blocks south of Washington and Tucker.

What kind of music are you going to book at the venue?
We are currently booking local bands as well as touring bands. As long as you have a great sound, we want to give everyone an opportunity to play -- whether it be alternative, indie, punk [or] rock -- just to name a few. We would like to give everyone a fair shot to play publicly and get their name out.

What do you hope to bring to the St. Louis music scene?
We want people to have a new alternative to the clubs we've all been to. Our main focus is the music. It's about great music and good times. Our goal is to have it become a St. Louis landmark for bands and fans alike. Somewhere you can go even if you don't know who is playing just to have a good time and hear local artists.

How can people get information about the venue?
For information about 2 Cents Plain visit our MySpace page, www.myspace.com/2centsplain. The concert calendar is in the works and should be posted soon along with our final opening date.

Anything else you would like to add?
We just want to thank everyone who has helped make this possible. We are looking forward to opening soon and seeing everyone there.
