Lapush Homespun: Review of Modern Blues

• Thanks Matt, well at least someone actually reads the articles (though i can understand how one might fall asleep or attempt to off themselves after the first couple of lines). The dude from Lapush used the word "indie". Indie was a term which initially referred to independent label rock bands, due to the recent explosion of the internet and everyone and their mother having an label, it now more describes a style of music that you know when you hear (even if they are on a larger label). Exhibit a: Arctic Monkeys, The Hold Steady, The Shins, Broken Social Scene, Editors, The Kooks are indie bands..Lapush is not! They fall into the category known as 'brutal'.

• Does anyone else think that Steve Perry rips off Sam Cooke? Also, please check out this website: www.myspace.com/ihatethelivingthings I went to high school with one of them, he was known as Jason Rothman then, before he became Lillian Berlin. Although he claims to have endured a lot of abuse because of his name during high school, I don't really understand that; No one gets beat up for being named Jason. He dated girls, was in student gov't., etc. Their whole story is utter bullshit - but, hey, Bob Dylan "invented" himself too, right? I also was at that Skubies show. mngo

• Fun Fact: After the Skoobies, members of Living Things were in this awesome, female-fronted electro band called Atrixo. (I believe this was in Chicago.) They had a song on a Q101 comp (which I own), and an album that was supposed to come out on Hollywood Records around the turn of the century, but was shelved. But a kind soul gave me a copy anyway. And it's awesome. I have the MP3s around, and I'm tempted to post one at some point. I didn't even grow up here, and I still have baby pictures. Do I get a prize? P.S. I'm in Cleveland right now at the 'rents, quite possibly the only other Midwest town that rivals the Lou for unironic love of classic rock. You can hear Led Zep and Journey every twenty minutes pretty much. P.P.S. My little brother loves Journey with a passion. Somehow he never wanted to raid the "cool record collection" of the "cool older sister." However, he did go see GNR last Thanksgiving. That's some cred. And he loves REM. And some of Morrissey's Southpaw Grammar. Hm. P.P.P.S. Dunkin' Donuts coffee is the shit. Caffeine, ho!

• I meant it in the colloquial sense (i.e., one person's nostalgic tenderness for "Don't Stop Believin'" is another person's <i>Sopranos</i>-fueled terror), but I am delighted to know that Potato Potahto was also a band. Hee!

• Potato Potahto broke up, but two of the dudes are in Nerve Parade now. And yes, the Living Things grew out of the Skoobies. And now they're all about sticking it to the Man, and various Man-related silliness. Tee-hee! Welcome to St Louis, where we will, for better & for worse, NEVER let you forget your baby pictures.

• Personally, "Don't Stop Believin'" makes me worry I'm going to be shot in the head, mid-onion-ring-bite, by a dude in a Members Only jacket. Potato, potahto.

• Facetious? Are you saying I'm fat? I mean, I know I'm a wee bit bloated from my lost weekend, but there's no reason to be kuh-rewel, ignatz. Tonight, local music be damned, I'm heading to Pop's to see the Journey Tribute band "Evolution." Don't Stop Believin' makes me long for the simpler days of my youth. James Mnago.

New topic: The Living Things career as Living Things is less substantial than their career as that electro-dance band whose name I don't remember as well as their career as 13 year olds playing the Lemonhead's "Great Big No" at Pointfest under the name the Skoobies. • indie rock is dead. --frederick nietzsche the rise of the internet made the concept of indie music die. (although the first person to talk about the RFT music awards category gets virtual-punched.) i think of indie more as a sonic aesthetic now, not a physical, tangible thing tied to labels/movements (as it was in the 1990s more, i think). (i kind of feel like that argument is as valid as, like, the word alternative. which died along with nirvana, if it ever existed in the first place.)

• Matt- I understand the difference between and independent artist and "indie" as a genre. I was just pointing out in my usual holier-than-thou fashion that the RFT blog's resident negative Nancy does not.

• "Grammys for indie bands". Lapush dude said it, but please oh please can we not get into what constitutes "indie music". Lapush: not signed to major label, therefore "indie". Lapush: creators of radio friendly modern pop rock, therefore not "indie". Most unwinnable of pointless unwinnable music nerd arguments. On second thought...go for it!
