The Torques: Bonus Critpick

This weekend is jammed with great live music options, but here's another: This Sunday in the Iron Barley beer garden (using that phrase very loosely), The Torques (pronounced Tor-Kays) from Kansas City will be revving through a set of pre-British Invasion covers, both familiar and oblique. Led by singer and bassist Kenny Butterfield (father of Kevin, the lead singer and songwriter of St. Louis' best trad-ish country band The Linemen), and featuring the voices, guitars and drums of Stevie Wolverton, Lee Bo Epperson and Johnny Isom, the band has been playing together for over 30 years. Even Vietnam (three out of four of the Torques were drafted) couldn't break up the group. They still do the sock-hop hits, and with four strong singers and hot, dueling guitar work, they'll give Los Straitjackets a run for their instrumental money. The Platters, the Drifters, the Everlys, Jay and the Americans, Chuck Berry, Chuck Willis, Gene Chandler and Sam Cooke -- the Torques can do it all, and with panache and humor. Check them out.
