Lyfestile Leaves Queen of Sheba

Categories: Music, News

Lyfestile has decided to leave the weekly hip-hop night he started hosting in July at the Ethiopian restaurant Queen of Sheba.

Here’s an excerpt of what he had to say about it on his MySpace page:

“In the last 2 weeks or so some new folks were brought in to promote the nite and their vision didn't exactly mesh with ours. The crowds kept getting thinner and we were approached with options that we didn't particularly want to explore. Someone suggested we "open the mic" which we did for one nite. We shouldn't have. One of 'em asked me if he could hook his ipod up to the mixer (After spending about 10 minutes explaining to me what "old school hiphop" is). Apparently "Old School" hip hop is 90's Tupac and Biggie. Fuck it, we gave it a shot. We'll be back to do some special events for our people.”

Lyfestile didn’t return calls requesting comment for this piece.

Queen of Sheba owner Sam Assefa says that hip-hop Wednesdays will continue, but with him as the temporary new DJ and host. He describes his syle as "pretty much everything, not too mainstream, not a lot of stuff from radio.”

Assefa adds he and Lyfestile are still friends and, “have plans for other things. We just haven’t decided when it’s going to happen,” but wouldn’t divulge any details.

Lyfestile’s night is the second in as many weeks to die, after DJ Needles ended his long-running JazzyPhatNappy night at 609 two weeks ago. Both heads and their nights were profiled in my RFT story Battle of the Beats.
