Last Night's Show: Bobby Bare Jr's Pixies Cover Band
Really, I have nothing critical to say about this show. Except that it was awesome. Why? Bullet points:
*The band was having so much fun. Perhaps because the crowd was so joyous and stoked to be listening to Pixies covers -- we're talking jumping around, sing-alongs, freaking out. But the grins and loose atmosphere of the show made it so excellent and pure fun.
*Forget Cassettes Beth -- a.k.a. the bassist, and woman who played the Kim Deal role on "Gigantic" and other songs -- was amazing.
*Bare pretty much nailed Frank Black's angsty, searing screams. So much so that at one point, he seemed to be morphing into Frank Black; he was that convincing.
*The setlist was pretty much perfect. Although I would have liked to have heard "Holiday Song" or "Alec Eiffel," Bare and his band covered the gamut of Pixies glory: "Head On," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Wave of Mutilation," "Gigantic," "Debaser," "Where Is My Mind?," "Caribou" and (my personal fave) "U Mass." Oh, and "Hey."
*There were no Breeders songs, although the riff to "Saints" was introduced a few times (along with a snippet of Weezer's "Say It Ain't So").
*The night was summed up like this: I thought it was almost better than the Pixies reunion show I saw, a sentiment echoed by a friend who said: "Well, of course: The band is having fun." Snap! But too true.
Viva la Pixies!
