'90s Hip-Hop Jam of the Week: Tag Team, "Whoomp! There It Is"

Girl Talk uses Tag Team's "Whoomp! There It Is" to great effect on his new CD, Feed the Animals, and so it inspired this week's '90s hip-hop jam of the week. Tag Team was the Miamo duo of DC The Brain Supreme and Steve Roll'n, and this song hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart in 1993.

Fun facts:

1. Bellmark Records released a Tag Team greatest-hits CD in 2000.

2. No, it didn't contain twelve remixes of this song.

3. Only three versions of "Whoomp!" appeared -- but weirdly enough, the original version was not included. (I'm guessing it involved the label being unable to obtain rights to the original.)

4. There was a "2000 remix," a "House Mix" and my personal favorite, the Spanish Mix.

5. The Spanish version of "Whoomp! There It Is" translates into "Whoomp! (Si Lo Es)."

6. Keeping track of the remakes/re-dos of this song is almost impossible; the list here, however, is rather exhaustive.

7. One of the best Beavis and Butt-head video commentaries ever involves this song. Instead of saying "Whoomp! There it is!" the boys sing/snicker: "Whoomp! There's my butt! Whoomp! There's my butt!"

8. Pretty much the best/worst version of the song -- with video! -- is after the jump.

All together now: "Whoomp! Addams Family, there it is!"
