New Girl Talk CD Out Now -- Name Your Price. Also, Another Rocker Tased

gtalk.jpg

From Pitchfork, who alerted me that Girl Talk's new album is now available to download for free. I've already heard Twisted Sister, the Spencer Davis Group song "Gimme Some Lovin'," Temple of the Dog and other amazing bits. And I'm three minutes in. Go here to grab it.

Speaking of tasing, Chromewaves pointed out that ex-Velocity Girl drummer Jim Spellman was tased recently, as part of a CNN segment. Spellman now works for the cable station -- although his new band, Julie Ocean, is solid fuzz-pop. (Going to try to track down an MP3; sit tight.)

[Update: Thursday, 5:30 p.m. MP3! Whee!]

MP3: Julie Ocean, "#1 Song"

matt, i totally know what you're saying. i love me some girl talk but (especially live) shit is often going by too fast for me to really get into it. i think it's a generational difference in attention spans, cause everyone younger than me is allll about it, i'm down but randomly annoyed, and your old ass can't hang. at that last girl talk show i was all "shit! quit switching it up so fast! i didn't finish my safety dance and already i've got to come on eileen! damn! and quit tasing me, bro!"

being old is no fun.

if eric hall let me post any of his mash-ups on this blog ,i would do that in a heartbeat and he would become a superstar. his sets as DJ Lil Baby Mama Reba McEntire are inspired.

Girl Talk makes me feel like an old square rock dude. I get that there's a skill in what he's doing. I get that if I was at a club I'd probably be into it (I once heard a guy slip some Slint beats into a hip-hop set & thought it was brilliant), but I just don't see how there's any real insight. He's not adding anything to what was already there. If anything, he's dumbing it down. It's like he's just throwing in a million pop culture references & you're just supposed to like it because you recognize them. Give me Eric Hall's "99 Problems/99 Luftballoons" mash up any day of the week. Compared to that, Girl Talk is just a guy with ADD & some expensive beat matching software. 'Course I'm just an old square rock dude.

Gotta luv Flo's "Low" ("Apple bottom jeans and them boots with the fur") over the Cardigans "Love Fool"
