Saturday, October 18: Broken Social Scene vs. David Byrne vs. Cobra Starship

• The lack of beer at the Gargoyle is a bigger problem for me than the sound. Then agian, I'm 30. I've always been a bigger fan of bands influenced by the Talking Heads than the Talking Heads themselves. I anticipate that to be a pretty boring show. Also, the Fox is up their with the Gargoyle as one of my least favorite places to see a rock show, but for different reasons. It's just so stuffy, people need to be able to move around, drink and shout, or even over-rock if necessary. None of this is possible at the Fabulous Fox.

• David Byrne. No question. Not only does he continue to be an incredible artist/musician/performer to this day, add to that the fact that he'll be performing old Talking Heads songs and I'm there in a heartbeat. What's the exact minute of the day on Saturday when the tickets go on sale? I can't find anything else about this online. I only wish Eno would join him for the tour...

• Good point, Annie. David Byrne is hard to pass up, and that is guaranteed to be an excellent show. It depends on what the ticket prices are. The Fox has been getting some unbelievable shows but also charging astronomical ticket prices (hello, Tom Waits). BSS shows are so great, though, girls or no girls in the band. I will see them twice this weekend in Chicago (at Lolla and also at their late show at the Metro). I saw Kevin Drew (with members of BSS) at the Metro late last year and it was such a joyous show.

• if this was david byrne in 1984 maybe, or maybe even 1989,but in 2008? nope.

• man, you guys are killing me. BSS wouldn't exist if david byrne/eno (and talking heads) had never made records. this is such a no-brainer, i'm going to the Fox. BSS over David Byrne? really?

• im going bss, but id be going more wholeheartedly if any of the bss girls were gonna be there. theyre doing a seven piece bss-guy only tour.

• I might drive to Columbia and skip the Gargoyle show. After two horrendous experiences at the Gargoyle last year (brought on more by the immature, obnoxious audience and lack of beer than sound problems), I have sworn it off for good. (Unless Sonic Youth plays there.) I guess 32 is just too old to be attending shows there. BSS should be playing the freakin' Pageant.

• yeah, the Gargoyle's sound is bad. It's all student-run, so they're these really nice kids going for audio engineering degrees that are running sound and they're like, honestly REALLY trying, but they're not pros by any means and the system's too much for them so it always fucks up. So it's hard to be mean to them, but it makes every show suck. BSS vs. David Byrne/Eno is tough, but i think it's easy to declare Cobra Starship the losers in this instance.

• It'll be BSS for me, BUT WHY THE GARGOYLE??? That's where they played last time in town, and the sound was atrocious, with major feedback problems...

• It looks like BSS is a go for October. The Blue Note (here in COMO) has already announced their show the night before STL. The band's website has the dates up as well.
