Show Review, Setlist and Photos: Steely Dan at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, St. Louis, Monday, August 18

• went to the chicago show it was great!!very nice place,great sound we had great seats.I do love to get up and jam with the dan not many people were doing that.Im just really happy they still tour!!!!! they need to get in and do more recording

• hey banyan tree, those are some pretty harsh words! Because there were people drinking at a steely show (oh no!) and some more than usual (oh no!) that makes them alcoholics???!!!! And Davis stating that steely dan is not the place for having a good time is absolutley retarded! First off, its a funk/disco/rock concert which i would say are 3 very good reasons to want to get up and dance! Second, everyone enjoys concerts in their own way, there is no right or wrong. Now if you completely go overboard and its being harmful to others then thats a different story, which i did not see at all! I think before you folks go to another show, no matter what it is, take the stick outta your ass and leave it at home! cause it stinks! ;)

• Dallas tonite was spot on. Took my 20 year old to balance the crowd. Lots of standing o's, dancing and general groovin'. Aja was godlike, as was most of John Haringtons guitar work. Pretzel Logic was a great surprise and totally time-warped everyone. Very tight band, Royal Scam was worth the price of admission. Casey

• Looks like they are mixing up the setlist a tiny bit from show to show. Last night in Houston they played essentially the same set except black cow instead of babylon sisters and they played Pretzel Logic before Kid Charlemagne in the encore. Very impressed with the band. Fagen's voice really picked up toward the end, especially on Pretzel Logic. Crowd in Houston was actually pretty good, including one girl in the front row stripper-dancin to Josie.

• Saw their show in Vegas the weekend before , they played "Dont Take Me Alive " in addition to Kid Charlemagne as encores. I think the show was a little short , DF's voice must be tired as you take away the instrumentals and the backup singers taking the lead and he did 14 songs. The tour is about over so maybe he is tired , who knows, but I still loved the show ,had killer seats in the second row . The crowd was a little subdued early on but I thought it picked up , missed the dude jumping on the stage , beautiful venue , first time at the Fox .

• Pretzel Logic was on the set list as part of the encore along with one other song- "Home At Last," maybe? Speculation is that they cut the encore to one song due to the guy jumped on stage and got his ass kicked by the bouncers. The crowd was a major distraction. More to follow in my full review later today.

• In Aug '96 Dan made their only appearance in Kansas City in the past 38 years now, I think. I was there in the 6th row & had my socks blown off. Have been patiently waiting ever since for a return, finally figured out it will never happen, got two 10th-row seats to this show & drove across the state to see them again. Man I love Steely Dan live. It was a great show as expected. The only complaint I had was the abrupt end of the show(I kept thinking there would be two segments w/ a midshow intermission, but when they ripped into 'My Old School', I realized it wasnt going to happen), and by the time I had gotten up from my chair, I had put a greatest hits CD together in my mind of all the great songs they left on the table that night. No 'Deacon Blues, no 'Third World Man', 'Time Out of Mind, 'Home at Last', 'Haitian Divorce', 'Caves of Altamira', 'Black Cow', 'Glamour Profession', 'Dont Take Me Alive', 'Pretzel Logic', and how, just how, do they get out of St Louis w/o playing 'East St Louis Toodle-oo! I guess my main complaint is that they only played 2 hours instead of the 10-hour show I wanted. Whenever they quit, its too soon. Now, if they can afford to play a 5000-seat arena in St Louis, why cant they come play here in KC again?

• partying like they did 30 years ago? some people never understand there is a time and place for that and steely dan is not it. i'll remain pretty calm and focused during SD and if i feel like partying then i'll just wait until the night after steely dan when i'll see judas priest at a different venue in the same general area (dallas/ft. worth). flame away @ the heavy metal(at least it's quality heavy metal-yes, there is such a thing)but i do listen to a wider variety of music than anyone i know my age (late 40's) everything but rap, that trash they call "rhythm & blues" nowadays,hip-hop, and country (i'm allergic to C&W). true story: i left a bottle of wellbutrin XL on my old roomates' stereo speaker and the garth brooks playing through his stereo ruined the medication because it's so depressing.

• My observation on the crowd is that there were a lot of folks trying to party like they did 30 years ago, and they were just sloppy graying drunks. It was really bad to watch the folks who have become alcoholics since their behavior adversely affected those around them.

• I have to admit I was underwhelmed by the crowd. It may be wrong to say it, but the section I was in was extremely subdued. Some enthusiasm would have been nice! Here's my slightly longer review: oldskoolreview.blogspot.com/
