Video: Vivian Girls, "Tell the World"

Categories: Videodrone

Every time I look at the Way Out Club schedule, I do a double-take, because the venue lists a band called "Vivian Girls" rather frequently. This is a local band (which I believe is a side project of Kevin Buckley from Grace Basement, although I could be wrong), and not the super-hyped NYC group of the same name. That Vivian Girls just released a video for its song "Tell the World" -- and despite it being totally derivative of a bunch of different genres and eras (girl-groups, UK C86 twee-pop, goth-surf), I'm digging this song. In fact, all of the comparisons I've heard -- including the Shop Assistants, which is totally off-base -- seem never to mention that the Vivian Girls are basically a garage-pop band. I think a bunch of people in town will dig 'em (except for drummers, who I think will be a wee bit upset at the lack of steady beat-keeping), so check out the video. The trio's full-length is being reissued October 7.
