Did Everyone Have Fun This Weekend?

Did everyone have fun at shows this weekend? I'm on a big deadline, so besides Of Montreal and a quick trip by the Billiken Club, I was writing. Let me live vicariously -- who went where? I'm particularly interested in how Jonathan Richman and Kentucky Knife Fight's CD release show was.

Heckfire yeah! Dax-O-Ween in full effect. I didn't know Bad Folk were playin' their last 'til Saturday night (though it was mentioned Friday night I believe), so I hit Mangia and managed to catch the last song or two. As for Dax-O-Ween(s) itself, it was unstoppable! I thought the Bunny Grunties (or whatever they are called) were the king shit! Or at least the few songs I caught of them playing. Bad Folkens tighter than usual, RDR circuit most electrifying. The "Matts of Baysayboos Plus Two" horn section most definitely accompanied Googolplex-me-a (who, for those reading the accolades heaped upon me by the Harnish above, and wondering "just what is he talking about?" shall be performing at Mangia on December 11th with the Pat Sajak Assassins?), as did Eric Von Damage/Cabbage himself for the concluding number. Way Out Club Saturday night also unstoppable. Candy corn, pumpkin bread minis, and choco-crisp eyeballs back for the second night in a row. Sex Brobots I missed most of but I remain confident they rocked and rolled as per usual. That Is My Daughter, always is my pleasure. Wooden Kites, mostly in costume and all ready for some football (if Chris's costume was any indication); beauty abounds when fellers like these come together. Monster Smash impromptu-style more than satisfactory. A better duo of shows could scarcely be asked-for, put-together, or attended. Finances and drudgery forbade attendance at Jonathan Richman but I did hear reports it was better than the March show (which I both attended and loved), dang! Did anyone go to the show at the Scott Joplin house last night? I neglected to in spite of great interest and intention... Also was at Tower Grove Harvest Festival briefly and whatever was playing during that time sounded mighty nice (but I didn't make it to the stage to watch).
Jonathan Richman was great, a big step up from a mostly down-tempo and depressing show in March. He played lots of favorites ("I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar" and "Give Paris One More Chance" as well as an instrumental "Twilight in Boston") and the newer material worked better amid the hits. Nice, quiet crowd, too - it was total silence for many of JoJo's song-ending classical guitar solos.
Mount Eerie and Julie Doiron were inspiring and wonderful at the Lemp Arts Center. Amazingly, I've never been to Lemp in the 5+ years I've lived in STL. I didn't know they only lock the door during songs. Apologies for my confused rattling. Jennifer O'Connor was great at Off Broadway. Not a big crowd, though, to put it mildly.
Went to see the Diplomats of Solid Sound at the Gramophone on Friday. They were a ton of fun and did a cover of "I'm Blue" by the Ikettes, which was especially appropriate given the Gramophone's proximity to Sweetie Pie's (not sure if that was intentional or not). Kentucky Knife Fight killed it, as always, on Saturday night and Dana Anderson and the Dirty 30's turned in solid sets. We (the Blind Eyes) brought down the twang quotient of the evening considerably, but the audience didn't seem to mind too much. It was a nice night of rock.
Dax-o-Ween was an amazing, super good time. if you were somewhere else, you truly missed out. B'grunt and Rum Drum were great, of course. And Mustard R� was beyond excellent. But Bad Folk? Better than ever. I can't even talk about it. Bad Folk breaking up gives me sad face. What a bummer.
My weekend was all about Dax-o-Ween, as it was the Bert Dax Halloween CD release shows. Thank you to all who attended! Friday at the Wayout was fun fun fun, and that Mustard ROB is force of nature. Anyone who's not seen his solo performance should really check it out. I won't gush too much cuz I know he reads this blog, but ask me in person & I'll wax poetic. Rum Drums ruled as well & Bad Folk were at their shambling best, sadly for the 2nd to last ever time. Bunnygrunt? Meh. Saturday at the Wayout continued more of the awesome. The SexBots dstroyed. That's My Duaghter have hit their groove with new drummer Karen & played their most balls-out set I've ever seen, then Bassamp & his lovely lady did "Monster Mash" with an on-the-spot pickup band, then Wooden Kites played a bunch of new songs that were really really good. Sunday night I was able to catch Dimmu Borgir (silly yet awesome) and a lil' bit of Danzig (kinda not looking/sounding so good these days), then I DJ-ed 4 hours of METAL at the Halo Bar. This weekend ruled! ps-buy a Bert Dax Halloween cd at Vintage Vinyl, Euclid, or Apop. I'll be glad you did!
