R.I.P. Stooges Guitarist Ron Asheton
Via TIRC, via NME: Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead at the age of 60 at his Michigan home. Cause of death is unknown right now.
You know, it's almost easy to forget how influential the Stooges are on modern music -- all strains of it. Every time I listen to one of their older songs, I'm struck by how many new bands -- and for that matter, how many bands in the past, oh, nearly 40 years who were considered "new" -- take cues from the band. He'll be missed. In recent years, the Stooges toured and performed with bassist Mike Watt, including SXSW 2007. Here's freelancer Jaime Lees' coverage of that show.
