New St. Louis Indie-Rock Venue: Antarctica?

Categories: This Just In
Tip o' the cap to a blog reader who passed along this curious Craigslist posting: "staff for indie rock music venue/lounge wanted."

The ad says the venue -- called Antarctica and located at 5226 Gravois -- is looking for a "bartender, barback, dj, door person and post modern historian." Applicants are asked to submit a mix CD, with the following requirements:

mix cd should contain music in and around the neighborhood of indie rock/pop. the more unknown the bands/songs the better, but not at the cost of song quality, i.e. an unknown 7/10 song trumps a well known 8/10 song, but an unknown 7/10 song does not trump a well known 9/10 song.
I emailed the ad, but haven't heard back yet. A Google search of the address brings up Carpet N More and a phone number that's disconnected when I call. And a few of my contacts haven't heard anything about this. So I turn to you, dear A to Z readers: Has anyone heard anything about this? Is this a real place opening? Is this someone just dying to hear lots of new music? Comment away.

keeping it constructive... 60 degrees (heat on) is not freezing. maybe, i'll shoot for 65 next time. it's my first winter being open so i'm still experimenting with optimal climate control. $50 for an opening local at a very small show is not "no compensation". three stage monitors hasn't been an issue with other bands (and the drummer is the most likely to go without if three is not enough). lighting is minimal, very true (but also flexible, and 'elle eye' never asked for alteration). a new sound guy was on that night, so the vocal issue for two songs, for one of the three singers, was true.

communicating your concerns very clearly and directly (i.e. i can't see with the light in this position, or my fingers won't work at this temperature) would prove effective as it's in no one's interest to make anyone feel embarrassed. anyway, i always welcome constructive feedback, in real time if possible, but after the fact is not unwelcome either.

Worse than Fubar.Just played there tonight. The owner would not turn on the heat even though it was below freezing. When I asked if it would be getting warmer in there he questioned why and I told him that it would change out tuning. He asked, "The temperature effects your tuning?"We played the first three songs with my mic off and a friend forced the "sound guy" to turn my mic on. Before the show I asked him, "Are you the sound guy?" he said, "No." I said, "well, you're the guy at the board so that makes you the sound guy" and he huffed at me. There is NO lighting. On stage there are two garage lamps that are so effing bright in your face that I couldn't even see my fret board. I had to force them to give our drummer a monitor, "Your drummer needs a monitor?" the owner asked me with a blank face. Fortunately our friends helped to get the sound right be the second half of our set. But my fingers were so cold and I was so blinded that I was embarrassed by the whole thing. How did this place ever come to be? How does a guy open a venue when he has no clue what it takes to put on a show??? Myself, my band, and our friends will never attend this venue again. Thanks for the NO COMPENSATION show. At least my guitarist finagled a free beer for my band. Yay. a free $2 PBR and mud on my face. Thanks, Antarctica and Tim Flynn for a very shitty experience.

It's almost completely white in there? Are you kidding? Does anyone know if this place is non-smoking?

Yeah he posted for interior design ideas and didn't want to pay anyone for them. Not cool buddy. Karma.

John, I love that I read your comment in my head and it sounded exactly as if you blabbed it to me face. Bully!

"Hey, you'll wait 20 minutes for a drink, but at least all the stuck up people staffing our venue will make you feel charmingly inferior. Buy another ironic t-shirt that is too tight."

PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS A JOKE!?!

Submit a mix cd? And "the more unknown the bands/songs the better..."

What a douche!

It's unlike like me to curse the potential opening of any venue, but damn. You know what would be nice? If this new club hired people who could actually do their jobs. Jesus.

I don't know this dude at all, but in defense of anyone trying to start a new business in the past year plus, small business loans are nearly impossible to come by right now. Hence delays in opening for places like Foam, etc.

Dude is flighty- trying to do things on the cheap. If it happens it won't be for very long. I hope he makes it, but after meeting him I have my doubts. They ARE doing work on the place in Bevo, but its been on going for a while. It was in the works at least since October of last year so he isn't moving very fast. Not sure what he does for a living but I know he runs a website www.sminds.com its a personality test site.

It's real! This is a venue being started by Tim Flynn. He's been working on it for quite a while, and it should be very cool, judging by the furniture for it that he has been amassing in his basement for the last year.
