St. Louis Weekend Concert Calendar: April 3 to 5

• I was in no way denying any hesh-ness in my past, just saying the strain wasn't pure. Put me in a conversation with John Hancock from Head On Collision or Mark'n'Muffy from KDHX or 90% of the Lifers at Pop's last night & my lack of full-teen Metal immersion would become abundantly clear. I like what I like, but if Thrust had their way, I would be a dead man... Also, I miss Mango...

• Oh man, was anybody else at Exodus last night? That show ruled! Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm pretty much a poseur when it comes to Metal. I like it, quite a bit in fact, but at that crucial high school period when I should have been listening to nothing but Metal I was also jamming Game Theory & Yes & Eugene Chadbourne, so while I like the Metal, I cannot *call* myself Metal by any means, therefore, I am a poseur. THAT SAID, the show destroyed! I missed the first couple bands so can't comment, because a)it's cheaper to drink at home than at Pop's & b)I'm a poseur, but I caught most of the set by the Horde from the Quad Cities & thought they were pretty great. Big 6'5" gaunt Viking dude bass player/singer, flanked by 2 short fat bearded shredding guitar players. Classic 80's thrash, great guitar playing. If they were from Richmond VA (the current hotbed of that kinda thing)instead of the Quad Cities, they'd probably have a bunch of records out & be playing the Fest. Good for them getting out there & doing it right. Hope to see them again soon! Next up, Warbringer! Playing with quite a handicap, as the drummer had broken his wrist a week ago, so one of the guitarists was playing drums. Quite admirably, I must say. Guitarist they had was a dead ringer for the lovechild of Kirk Hammett & Slash, but ripped like somebody out of a Mike Varney "New Faces in Metal" column from 1986, all pinch harmonics & non-stop shreddage, & y'know that thing where you're holding the guitar perpendicular by the whammy bar? He did that. Man, he was right on! Gotta say, they put to shame the current bunch of "ironic" thrashers (3 Inches Of Blood, anybody?), or the post-Pantera power-thrash tough-thug scene. Even heard a bunch of the grizzled old dudes around me appreciating their jams. Now I guess would be an ideal time to mention the crowd. Smaller than I expected (just the small side stage at Pop's, not the whole room), but made up almost entirely of Lifers. Old dudes & young losers. I say both affectionately, cuz I *am* both of those things. Not many chicks, not many "cool" people. One Black guy, which is more than I saw at the last Hip-Hop show I went to (Themselves at the Firebird). Anyway, it's the 25th anniversary of "Bonded By Blood", but I've written too much already. • Vivian Girls' MySpace says they're in Balto on Saturday night, but indeed Lemmons' MySpace suggests they're at Lemmons. Maybe there are several outfits known as Vivian Girls. Henry Darger is mighty popular, after all! Celia plays tonight (Friday) at Stone Spiral Coffeehouse in Maplewood, and Saturday night at Three Monkeys.

• Hi Annie, I heard that Vivian Girls (Brooklyn) are playing at Lemmons on Saturday. True or false?!

• Also, tonight at the Wedge is the benefit for the Alliance to Save Cleveland High, featuring Jesse Irwin, the Redheaded Strangers, and the Monads.

• On Saturday, Rum Drum Ramblers at Firecracker Press. Also on Sunday, Dana Falconberry at the Tin Ceiling Theater.
