Susan Boyle Restores My Faith in Humanity

As Annie mentioned yesterday, it's cold and gray and altogether a depressing time to be in St. Louis. Despite all the goodwill that was supposed to be generated by Easter and Passover (rebirth, freedom, chocolate), my thoughts have taken a misanthropic turn.

This morning a friend sent me a YouTube clip of Susan Boyle's performance last Saturday night on Britain's Got Talent. Boyle is 47. She lives in a small village in Scotland with her cat. Her eyebrows have apparently never seen tweezers. She favors musicals. She seems cheerful and good-natured and completely ill-equipped to face Simon Cowell. I spent the entire seven minutes of the clip waiting for something awful to happen to her.

But Susan Boyle can sing! Forget every awful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" you've ever had to endure, forget even that you have sworn of Les Miz for life. My faith in humanity has been restored.
