So, Coldplay is in town tonight at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. And anyone I've talked to who's going to the show is -- shall we say -- sheepish. The phrase "guilty pleasure" has been thrown around quite a bit. Embarrassed blushes and giggles are the rule, not the exception. It's as if liking Coldplay is taboo -- a secret shame. And so I'm going to come out and say it:
I loved Viva La Vida; the CD actually still lives in my car. X&Y's cotton-candy airy pop grew on me big time -- and as for Yellow and A Rush of Blood to the Head, well -- they had me at "every single on there." I realize that some people need more convincing, however, and so here are five lesser-known Coldplay videos that solidify its diversity and irresistible nature.
"Crest of Waves." A B-side dating from the "Clocks" EP, and a song that stands up to any Britpop gem.
"Talk" (original version). This song leaked way before X&Y did, and the album version is far different. This song, however, highlights the Kraftwerk sample -- and is far superior to the final tune that ended up on Coldplay's album. (Not the Kraftwerk song, though. Geez, calm down cred police.)
"Clocks" (Royksopp's Trembling Heart Mix). The presence of Royksopp -- a fantastic Norwegian electro act -- transforms the watery piano ballad into a nifty electro-funk throb.
"Moses." Sure, it's a U2 ripoff -- but it's a damn good U2 ripoff. (And probably better than U2's most recent album, to be honest.)
"Lips Like Sugar" (Echo & the Bunnymen). Ian McCulloch is a self-avowed Coldplay fan, and Coldplay does the classic late '80s alt-rock single justice.

Coldplay is music to sooth your vagina. And that's about it.
Thank you for your awesome post. Could not agree more with you. They are the best band around and they are a great bunch of guys, serious about making good music, ambitious, modest. My favourite band of all times. I personally enjoy telling people I like them and seeing the surprise on people's faces.
i absolutely adore coldplay and i dont care who knows it, they are not in my eyes a guilty pleasure
all 4 albums have had at least 4/5 top notch songs them, their live shows are amongst the best and their front man is a endearing and appealing front man.
i love coldplay
Hi, I'm Kory, and I too.....like Coldplay. I tend to rate shows by the number of "chill" moments, and catching them last time around on the XY tour, I had plenty of them. It was a great show with Rilo Kiley opening as a bonus. I'll admit I haven't listened to the new album much, but I'm still stoked about the show.
Wait a minute. You still use CDs? In your car?
Refreshing take. Good music is good music. I caught them right after "Parachutes" came out before they were playing sold out arenas, have seen them during their rise to world's most popular band, and their attitude has remained the same, playing what they like and their fans like. The live shows are awesome. Don't know how they got the rep they did, especially Chris Martin. Maybe it's the movie star wife and weird kids names, but that shouldn't affect ones opinion of the music, which it probably has to many. Thanks for posting some of the more 'lesser-knowns,' the alternate of 'Talk' is great. Another great one not posted is 'I Ran Away' off 'The Scientist' single.
I thought it was more "doesn't that group sound just like Radiohead except.......they suck?" Just playin. I just remember when X&Y came out every superuncoolbutwishingtheywere older person that I worked with was tossing that thing around as "I'm still hip!"
It's okay to like them...we listen to music because it moves us, not because somebody tells us it's good...unless your a mindless zombie, and I don't think that of anyone here per se...
Personally, I think they're a bunch of hacks...

@poop shoot mcgee -- i meant far superior to the version that ultimately ended up on X&Y. i was tired when i wrote it. will fix.
I have noticed this phenomenon in the past week as well. I mentioned to someone that in the Chicago Reader's guide to Pitchfork they had described the band Frightened Rabbit as, "Coldplay for people with self respect." I found this to be quite humorous, but a bit harsh. I don't really understand this new public embarrassment of liking Coldplay. While I am not a particular fan of Coldplay, I am baffled by people who shy away from admitting to like Coldplay, but will openly talk about how great of a time they had at the Lynyrd Skynard / Kid Rock concert (do they know Lynyrd Skynard died?) or Pointfest. The latter two I find to be far worse musical offenses than Coldplay.
"This song, however, highlights the Kraftwerk sample -- and is far superior"
You're a moron.
And, actually, this is the only show I can mention to co-workers that I am going to and not get a blank stare in response.
The new album is really growing on me.
Can't wait for the show! Check out the video for "Life in Technicolor II." The one with the puppet show -- what a riot~

I know exactly how feel. Yesterday at work we were all talking about our Friday plans I mentioned that I was going to the Coldplay concert on Friday and everyone was like 'oh'. Behold the awkward silence. When conversation resumed a few seconds later one of the guys commented "doesn't that group sound just like U2 except.......they suck?" It was more than a little disconcerting. Why should I feel bad for liking a band that plays (at least in my opinion), absolutely great music? I found myself embarrassed for having tickets to what will probably be a great concert.
