Sad news: According to reports, Les Paul has died at the age of 94 in White Plains, New York. His innovations include multi-track recording and developing a solid-body electric guitar -- both of which are beyond standard in music at this point. He made it look easy, as this video below demonstrates.
I had the pleasure of seeing Les at a tribute last year, presented by the Rock Hall here in Cleveland, honoring his music and career.
Paul himself was an unannounced special guest - we didn't know until that evening that he would be there to play.
I was unaware of his contributions to the development of multi-track recording, so as I watched a career highlight film, my jaw dropped when I learned this. Same jaw dropped a bit further as I watched vintage video of Paul demonstrating his techniques.
Truly an amazing player and inventor - I had a few opportunities to see him play club shows in the past few years - wish I would have taken those opportunities, but I'm happy that I at least got to see him play.
