Everything's better in Canada, right? Including and especially its music, at least in recent years. (I'm being facetious, for the record. Mostly.) But Jets Overhead is one shining example of the country's solid exports. The band's sophomore effort, No Nations, recently came out on Vapor Records -- you know, Neil Young's label and one-time home of Tegan & Sara, among others -- and it's a sincere, no-frills collection of folk-leaning indie-rock that fits moments when solitude is perfection. RIYL Sam Roberts, Doves, Radiohead.
To celebrate, A to Z has an autographed copy of the band's album, No Nations, and a size small American Apparel black T-shirt with the album's cool cubed logo to give away. To enter, leave a comment with your full name and email and your favorite Canadian band -- and why! The contest ends next Wednesday, September 9, at noon. One winner will get the loot. Happy winning!
I can't decide between Metric, Stars, and Feist (technically not a band). So I'll say Broken Social Scene, cause without BSS, there would be no Emily Haines, Amy Millan, or Leslie Feist.
My favorite Canadian band is Protest the Hero. They are one of the top bands in Canada right now. They rock live, and recorded. Their lyrics are amazing and their riffs are impressive!!!!! I love them!
Tegan and Sara
When I first listened to The Con in full, it moved me the same way albums like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Automatic For The People did, which is no easy feat. The pain and emotion in that album feels like your first breakup, a stomachache, and the first time you were hit by a pitch in little league all rolled into one.
Barenaked Ladies, because I love double entendres
It's all about the Band. Why? Because Music from the Big Pink still is one of the best albums of all time. And if you don't believe me, no less than Bob Dylan thought they were good enough to be his backing band. And people say Bob knows a thing or two about music.
