Sounds like... Fans of Jon Hardy & the Public rejoice: The band is back in the studio, following up both its well-received full-length Working in Love and the online-only Randy Newman covers EP. Hardy says the two songs the band recorded are a bit of a departure.

"It's a bit difficult to describe them in comparison to our older tunes," Hardy says. "They're both quite different from one another and our prior work. The best info I can think to give is to describe where they were written."

Titled "A Hard Year" and "Nobody Like You," they're inspired by a trip to Mexico and a local church service. (Which song is inspired by which event is left up to the listener, although Hardy stresses, "Upon first listen I'm positive that anyone will be able to guess the corresponding song history.")

But before these two songs see the light of day, the band plans to release an EP called Sugar, which contains three new original songs and a cover of the Motown classic "Where Did Our Love Go?" The release is digital-only.

The band's next show is at the Firebird on Friday, October 23, with Murder City Players.
