New Local Band to Watch: Flaming Death Trap

Categories: MP3 Enhanced

(Are you in a local band? Are you new-ish? You should email me and tell me about yourself. Like a job interview, only with not as much pressure. Seriously.)

The other day, a member of the band Flaming Death Trap dropped me a line about his band's gig opening for SSLYBY tonight and Jemina Pearl on Monday, February 8. I checked out its MySpace -- and lo and behold, the new quartet sounds pretty good. Although the list of influences on its website is diverse and comprehensive (The Replacements, Chuck Berry, Built To Spill, My Morning Jacket, Dinosaur Jr., etc), the MySpace demos remind me of a band not mentioned: The Pixies! Vocalist Anthony Maurice has the pleasing-scream singing style perfected by Frank Black, while surf-influenced guitar licks and jagged, lo-fi fuzz round out the short, snappy songs. The band is recording an EP with Patrick Crecelius in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, check out an MP3 the band passed on, below.
