Classical Music Returns to the St. Louis Airwaves -- Kind Of...
Fans of Classic 99.1 (KFUO-FM) officially lost their beloved classical-music outpost in early May, when the FCC approved the sale of the station to Joy FM. The latter is "a listener-supported station that plays Christian music and broadcasts simultaneously on two signals, 97.7-FM and 94.1-FM, which together reach the City of St. Louis, the northern and western reaches of St. Louis County, St. Charles and O'Fallon, Mo.," according to the St. Louis Business Journal. Joy FM plans to flip 99.1 to Christian-oriented music programming when the license is transferred from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, at a date to be announced. This sale has been in the works since last October, and will leave St. Louis without a station dedicated to classical music.

Public radio station KWMU (90.7 FM) just announced the addition of an HD channel and online stream devoted exclusively to live classical music programming. Called "Classical 90.7 KWMU-3," the station describes its mission statement as:
Our hosts guide listeners into the heart of the classical repertoire, with carefully selected music that represent both classical favorites and lesser-known masterpieces, while ensuring that every hour of music is accessible and stimulating for novices and aficionados alike.
