The 2010 RFT Music Awards Nominees: The List

• I'm not sure how they found the electronica artist for the noms but ION,Don Tinsley, Polarized Minds, and Vinyl Bitchie should have been the noms because they have actually released successful albums in the electronica scene. They are the ones that made names for themselves not only in St Louis but all over the globe.

• Shouts out to everybody nominated in the hip hop group/ 'collective' category but lets just keep it all the way live, if u have more than just artist in the 'group' (clothing designers, bloggers, web designers, ect), please explain to me how the hell is that a hip-hop group? what about the music and the accomplishments?

• I have gotten 100's of emails concernin this nominee list. Everyone chill out. We dont need them to stop the publication, I still need my hookers out of the back page from time to time...The force has work to do...as well as STL DUB and the BSS...so lets get to it fellas. I could care less if I aint get nominated...well i did...IM IN THE FORCE...so I'll be spinnin at the showcase as i did the last 2 years... SPEC

• dudes, this crap happens every year - something goes wrong or someone who "deserves" to get nominated doesn't, etc. i think the issue some have is the word "Awards" -- it might be better (and hella easier on the stress levels of RFT staff) to rename it "Music Showcase" and cut out the idea of Awards altogether. Awards sets up winner vs. loser and gets everyone riled up because they feel they've "earned" this that or the other. and this way, they pick an artist from each genre, no need to have voting, and just put on a show. sure, there'll be people miffed they didn't get picked, but far fewer will take it as personally. just an idea.

• Watch me cede this point! I, too, am certain that no ruling by any judge in the American judicial system has ever been erroneous, bystander. You and I, we are in 100% agreement.

• This comment section is going to take me days to clean up...there hasn't been this much "scene whining" since uhhhhhhh last year's nominees announcement. Thank goodness Story Of The Year, Nelly and Ludo (or their fans) haven't checked in yet to see their slights because they might actually have some merit to complain about their omission. ; )

• There were eyewitnesses Pancake Master. She did win her lawsuit after all, apparently the judge felt she had sufficient evidence as well.

• They arent giving us anything. They'll take our Ad money but thats about it. An Outlet? We've booked hundreds of acts at 3 of the best venues in StL. Thats an outlet. We expect nothing in return but a lil respect and reciprocal love, but we get hated on for trying to "control the scene". We just wanna see it blow up like you, and it def could. But until the "press" is involved were just spinnin our wheels... and by the initial lists of nominees.. this press isnt involved in our scene at all.

• Man y'all going in on this. Shoutouts to all that were nominated and all those not nominated. Let's make the best music scene that this city has seen. Thank you Annie and The Riverfront Times for all your hard work. We can't forget that they are GIVING us an outlet and no matter who is nominated someone is not going to be happy. Let's keep it moving.

• Tech- I know ya'll got more than just MC's, but my point is that there isnt a album by the Force. Everyone in the Force makes albums that'll have a guest spot r 2 from other members of their crew (like everyone does), but that doesnt make it a group album. I listen and enjoy all ya'll stuff, but its still not a group in the traditional sense of the word. I read and understand Annie's point for puttin ya'll in there as a group, but seein how 80% of ur crew is up for solo awards it seems pretty redundant. But shit, its the RFT, we've never gotten love from em and i dont really ever expect 2. At least its good for cleanin windows and pickin up dog shit...

• Frozen Foods Section is an independent label, but also a collective. It entails rappers, producers, and djs...in other words: HIP HOP culture. A bunch of acts rep it, therefore it's a collective. I think the RFT should not have lumped "Collectives" and "Groups/Duos" together. There are a lot of dope groups/duos that could've been included, and filled out it's own category. Likewise with collectives.

• The Force is not a group of rappers. It is a collective, which includes rappers, singers, producers, photographers, promoters, graphic designers, clothing designers, and more. Thank you.

• bTW - Frozen Foods is a Label not a rap group. But they're your people you know that. The Force is a group of rappers (who are all nominated solo) not a rap group. At least this year we didnt have an instrumental album of for best rap of the year...

• The 12 to 6 Movement Steady shows on Delmar for years, video outpushin most, CD's featuring St. Louis' best, plus guest spot from national HipHop legends. Study up u lazy bastards. The only thing you know about StL hip-hop is what a few of your buddies want you to know. After your initial F up, you made some good corrections. But you gotta long way to go to be in the know.

• "the events that actually occurred," I hope there is some video footage or multiple eye-witness accounts, HECK I would settle for some character witnesses to back that malarkey-statement up! WITH ALL DUE RESPECT.

• Yeah, Matt Harnish, you should be grateful that the Lifetime Achievement Award that your band got last year knocked some of the dust off of your instruments and got you to come out of retirement and make an album that would be nominated for Best Of 2010. Why are you going to stir up dramas now? Also, you should be flattered to get a response from some one who seems to be in the know about what's happening behind the scenes here (likely an RFT staffer) when your comment wasn't even actually about the awards, but all the people with real concerns are not being responded to. I'd say singers nominated as rappers, PR firms nominated as music groups, someone who's a straight up songwriter being nominated as experimental, and someone who lives 150 miles away being nominated for Best DJ deserves some kind of response from the paper, too. We'll see...

• So, Matt Harnish, you don't think she should have sued Peat Henry for completely destroying her camera (and her livelihood as well) by purposefully and rudely throwing a drink on her? I would have sued for more than that based on the events that actually occurred.

• LOL! Every year...it's gotta be something. I am real curious to see how the "Showcase" goes on Washington. How many actual music venue's are down there? Good luck to everyone.

• Why isn't ROCKWELL KNUCKLES or TEF POE under the Category for best Hip Hop Solo Artist? The Force is a Movement, why are they grouped together as a group? I'm just curious if RFT is really paying attention to what "The Force" really is.

• Where are Illphonics? 2009 Taste of St. Louis Battle of the Band? 2-time finalists of said event for 2008 and 2009? Enough said.

• With all do respect to the editors involved in this event they are biting off more than they can chew. There is no way they could begin to cover all of the best bands in St. Louis. Nor could they keep track of who's working hard and making serious progress. The issues we musicians have with the editors will forever live until people who are active in the industry and St. Louis scene are making the picks for theese types of competitions. Next year I think instead of having a "Best in the RFT" comnpetition we should nominate judges whom we all know and the musicians should vote on the well respected judges to run the competition for 2011. Then the editors can cover the event in 2011 as editors and not judges as they are. However Fresh Heir has never been nominated for anything in St. Louis appreciate the oppurtunity to be recognized despite the category. Thanks to whomever decided we deserve some type of recognition. Most of you who've made posts are my friends and know where I'm coming from. My advice to you all is to forget about genres and continue to put on amazing shows. If we don't make it as musicians it won't be anyone's fault but our own. That being said, not Annie Zaleski or any other editor can take away what we deserve. I say, "Keep on Movin'" Annie we all appreciate the recognition the music scene is getting despite some of the contreversy about accuracy. And to musicians keep working. Shove yourselves downt St. Louis' throat. Make 'em recognize us for what we do best. Nick Savage

• Spankalicious nominated for the best dj in Stl, joke, he isnt a real dj, ableton jockey, and he doesn't live in Stl, he lives in boonville, if thats the case then i Nominated Atreus, and Sighnature as best electronic music Artist, even though they are from columbia, thats closer than boonville haha Flex Boogie Takes the Prize for best dj imo, that guy is a madman on the decks

• If you haven't checked out Everything Went Black you're sleeping. Band has been together less than a year and have done more than most in their bracket.

• There is no finer rock and roll act in the Midwest than Madahoochi. Good to see them back on the list.

• Kind of wondering why Fresh Heir is nominated for the best jam band category? Is it because they have horns? Is it because they are educated musicians in the jazz language so they decide to solo at times? Why would a hip hop group bring a jam band to Europe? Or is it because simply who ever did the nominees has never ever heard them play.... check out www.freshheirnation.com Probably could be nominated for best album along with the Earthworms. Lets have as many indie and folk bands as possible in that category. Way to be diverse RFT

• I completely agree with the prior comments regarding the Hip Hop/Rap category. Bradd Young and Aloha definitely deserve recognition, but they are singers, and the RFT needs to have an Soul/R&B/Funk category for both solo artists and groups, especially with the abundance of talent in all of these areas. Likewise, these inaccurate nominations block several actual emcees from getting the recognition they deserve.

• Wow, I was really looking forward to seeing Bear Ceuse at this festival...I only assumed that band would get it since numerous comments suggested it. I just keep wondering what the point is in nominating the same bands every year. I guess it is more of an honor to have real St. Louis music lovers nominate you via comments than to have the support of high-hat music reviewers. I would imagine that it is somewhat disheartening for a band to play in St. Louis for years and never get the support or recognition in its hometown...but hold your heads high, members of Bear Ceuse.

• Hey, can you guys give Peat Henry some sort of achievement award? It's kinda the least you can do since your photographer sued him for $1600...

• Sleepy Kitty has the look and sound of a much more experienced band. Definately a band to see and my pick for Best New Artist.

• How is there a best live band category and the livers aren't nominated? I have never seen their rhythm section miss a note EVER!!!!

• There won't be an rft response they need the controversy to generate more hits for advertising revenue. Also the same reason why the rft stories are often greatly exaggerated = so you will read and see or click the ads.

• I have plenty to say....BUT...Im a wait to see what the RFT response is first :)

• I'm seriously scratching my head after reading the nominations in the "urban" music categories. I do not understand why Aloha and Bradd Young are in the Hip-Hop/Rap Solo Artist category when neither of them rap. They are both excellent mainstream R&B singers who I know and love. Likewise, I am also confused as to why The Force is nominated as a Hip-Hop Collective/Group. The Force, as your own recently published article illustrated, is a movement of loosely affiliated artists, producers, DJs, bloggers, and promoters. It would similar to nominating Motown for a Grammy or The Harlem Renaissance for a literary award. It's too broad and doesn't really make sense. I think the RFT Music Awards would benefit from having more specific categories in the Urban music class. Funk/Soul/R&B is entirely too wide of a span to distill to five nominees. Aloha & Brad would be better served with a "Mainstream Urban" category. Artists like Teresajenee, UG Project (of which I am a member), and Lamar Harris (with whom I collaborate quite frequently) might be better served with an "Urban Alternative" category.

• While I understand the list of nominees is very difficult to create I have two issues. First, Mr. Supreme's complaint is similar to mine. I agree that Aloha and Bradd Young are extremely talented artists but they should not be in the Hip-Hop/Rap Solo Artist category. Second, I noticed that the Illphonics did not make it in again. As many shows as they've done around the area and the amount of accolades they've received, I'm very surprised they aren't nominated. Just wondering why they were passed over. Those are my only major gripes. Does .e have anything other than a myspace? I'm digging her stuff so far and want to hear more.

• I have to voice a serious complaint with the Hip-Hop section. The nominations for Solo artist are grossly inaccurate. I am relieved to see that based on the previous comment at least it's not soley aimed at Hip Hop and Rap. Now my point is Aloha and Bradd Young are amazing artists. Very talented and work very hard. In no way whatsoever are they rappers or emcees. They are singers, that sing and perform very well, but not rap. Absolutely wrong genre. I won't begin to say who I think should have been nominated, but those two spots were given to the wrong genre of music. It shows a disrespect to a culture that I without fear claim. That is all.

• I'm always glad so many great artists get this attention each year, but I have to repeat a complaint from last year. I think .e is very cool and deserving of a nomination, but I think that categorizing her as "Experimental" (whatever that even means) does her a huge disservice and makes it seem like no one is even really checking the artists out, but maybe just judging them by a scene they presume they're affiliated with. This is even more true now that there is an Electronic category, which is much more appropriate for her. I beg the staff and the public to check out .e's page (linked below) and judge for themselves.
