Save the Date! First Annual Dogtown Street Musicians Festival Pays Homage to Community Buskers
Dogtown is known for its Irish pubs and St. Patrick's day celebration. Yesterday 5 Score Pachyderm, a local music-centric blog, broke the news of a brand new annual festival, this one showcasing the town's street musicians.
On September 11, the 1200 -1300 block of Tamm Avenue will host The First Annual Dogtown Street Musicians Festival. The festival will be dedicated to the late Lucille Liston, musician and mother of Danny Liston. Danny, of Mama's Pride fame, used to own Seamus McDaniel's restaurant and pub in Dogtown. The purpose of this festival will be to celebrate the rich musical history of Dogtown. Throughout our history many neighborhood residents took part in various musical shows and plays. Although a few with great talent went on to professional careers in their musical skill, the great majority of the performers were just normal people who performed out of sheer enjoyment and community involvement. It is with this concept in mind that we would showcase street musicians who would be spread throughout the Dogtown business district playing their instruments and entertaining the community. These street musicians, commonly referred to as buskers, will be stationed on the sidewalk at the 1200 -1300 block of Tamm Avenue in the center of the business district.The Festival will occur on September 11th and the hours will be from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Each street musician will entertain and interact with the festival goers for a two hour shift starting at 11:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM. There will be a three judge panel to evaluate talent and the best original songs. The festival goers will vote for their favorite street musician.
The closing ceremonies will take place from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Intersection of Clayton and Tamm Avenue where a tribute to September 11, 2001 and the trophies presentation will take place. This years' festival will be dedicated to the memory of Lucille Liston, a professional musician from the Dogtown neighborhood. Lucille Liston was also Mama from the Mama's Pride fame. The Liston family will be in attendance at the closing dedication ceremonies.
The Dogtown Historical Society hopes that this festival will pay tribute to those talented people who love to entertain the public for the sake of entertainment itself. This reflects the spirit of our Dogtown history when ordinary folks sang, danced and acted in the various neighborhood festivities just for the benefit of their fellow man.
