Mathias and Kama from Earthworms Release Solo Records
In addition to preparing for its July 30 performance at the Duck Room, local rap quartet Earthworms has been working overtime to complete a gaggle of projects. Mathias and Kama are putting the finishing touches on solo albums, Devils, Pirates and Rebels, and The Kamatoth Cocktales... It'll Burn Inside (respectively). DJ Mahf is touring with Kansas City rapper Steddy P in support of their new, free mixtape While You Were Sleeping. Black Patrick is staying busy by adding "beat-maker" next to "rapper" on his musical resume. And if music isn't enough, the Earthworms have just confirmed that its film Capricorn Dreams, which documents the group's overseas Armed Forces Entertainment tour, will premiere at the Mad Art Gallery October 22.
Mathias explains that these solo albums function as a creative outlet for he and Kama outside of a group environment. "We've both been in the game a long time and neither one of us has ever had something that we could call our very own," he says. At the same time, both rappers credit Jonathan Toth from Hoth for bringing their visions to fruition. Toth recorded both albums at his Cooler studio, provided beats and vocals to both artists and as its name indicates, he serves as an executive producer and heavily featured guest on Kamatoth Cocktales.
Despite releasing solo albums, both rappers remain committed to the Earthworms. As Mathias points out, "We're all on each other's albums." Fans can expect to hear six of these new collaborative "solo" tracks from the Earthworms at its upcoming Duck Room show, which also features Steddy P, Ces Cru, The Grea Tones and Farout. The show's at 10 p.m. and cover is $5.
