Live-Blogging Nelly's Debut as Drive-Time Host on Hot 104.1 FM

Categories: Nelly

As we reported yesterday, St. Louis hip-hop icon Nelly has accepted a new gig as drive-time host at Hot 104.1 FM. No word on how long this stint will last, but the St. Lunatic is already two hours into his first shift. We thought we'd listen in and see how Nelly rocks the mic in a different way.

4:49 p.m.: "It's ya derrty Nelly." That seems to be his catch phrase, and it's a good one. Nelly takes a few minutes to talk about women's habit of ignoring the "gas needed" light on the dashboard and the need for more slow jams at parties.

4:50 p.m.: Nelly goes to the phone lines to take a call from well-wisher (and nationally syndicated morning show host) Rickey Smiley. It's a love-fest between these two.

5:04 p.m.: And the music don't stop; we've heard Drake's "Find Your Love," Gucci Mane's "Beat It Up" and DJ Khaled's guest-heavy "I'm So Hood."

5:10 p.m.: DJ Cuddy has taken over the decks for a bit, mixing in some more Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Rick Ross. You can follow the playlist here.

5:13 p.m.: Usher and Nicki Minaj rocking "Lil Freak." That Ush can do no wrong.

5:21 p.m.: Cuddy keeps the party rocking like a pro, but I'm starting to miss Nelly. I wonder what he's doing right now...

5:26 p.m.: Here we go! Nelly's new single "Tippin' in da Club" sounds great, all synth horn blasts and deep bass drum cannons.

5:30 p.m.: And with that, Nelly's back on the air. He's hyping his Twitter feed and his TV channel, all the while trying to figure out how to call up the traffic reports. Nelly advises all to stay off of Highway 40, almost instinctively. Hilarious.

5:38 p.m.: Trey Songz' pillow-biting slow jam "Neighbors Know My Name" gets its second airing of Nelly's shift.

5:48 p.m.: It all makes sense: Nelly is repping a contest to meet Trey Songz and Monica before their show at the Fox Theatre. More traffic reports and commercials, a reminder that drive-time radio is a give-and-take.

5:53 p.m.: So what did we learn? We learned that Nelly's ineptitude behind the board is just as charming as everything else the man does. We learned that either Nelly or someone at Hot 104.1 loves Trey Songz. And while no one knows (or is saying) how long Nelly will keep this drive-time gig, it will be an entertaining listen while it lasts.
