The Olympic marathon in 1896. Things aren't so primitive now.
KWMU reports that St. Louis will be getting an installment of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon (and half marathon) next year. In a press release issued on the event's website, the company noted that St. Charles' Lewis & Clark Marathon, which takes place this year on October 3, will be "rebranded" as the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and take place on a "new downtown race course, which is currently in development." The race is scheduled for October 23, 2011.

The gimmick of these rock & roll marathons is simple: About every mile or so along the path, bands entertain the runners. According to the website for the next scheduled race -- October 24, 2010 in Los Angeles -- local and regional bands have a chance to apply to perform, and there's a free concert after the race. Says the site: "Past headliners include: Goo Goo Dolls, Live, Brad Paisley, Black Crowes, Seal, Sara Evans, and many more." Who would you run a marathon to see?
