R.I.P. Captain Beefheart, 1941-2010

(Via Pitchfork) This is a sad way to start the weekend: Rolling Stone confirmed that the legendary avant-garde musician Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, has died. He was 69. Beefheart's 1969 LP Trout Mask Replica is considered a pillar of experimental music, one that's cited time and time again as an influence. Vliet released albums steadily throughout the '70s, but retired from music after 1982's Ice Cream for Crow. Since then, he's focused on art and lived a low-key existence. Below, an appearance on David Letterman that's well worth watching (also via Pitchfork):
