Win me!
In this week's paper, Michael Dauphin profiled I Hate Punk Rock records, the local label responsible for releasing music from locals such as the Disappeared, ((Thorlock)), the Haddonfields and Black for a Second. Courtesy of Mike Jones of IHPR, A to Z has a prize pack featuring all of the label's releases, save for the Disappeared's "The Radical Miracle," because IHPR only has a few copies left. (The entire list of the spoils can be found below.) To enter the contest, leave a comment with your real first and last name, a valid email address and the reason why you should win the catalog. This contest will close on Tuesday, January 25 at noon; the winner will be chosen and notified soon after. Happy entering! If you want more information on any of the label's music, head to its website, ihatepunkrock.net.

I should win because I drove all the way from Nashville, TN to visit your store the weekend of January 14th. I came to see a show and more specifically to visit your store and see your awesome collection of Punk and Metal for which we don't have in Nashville. I bought Metallica's "Whiplash" Single and about 10 punk records. I took a stick and proudly placed it on the bumper of my car to parade all the way back to Nashville and all around the city!!!

You should not pick me at all. I listen to horrible popular music that is force fed down my throat and am a product of name brand consumerism that will ultimately lead to the downfall of society. But before that happens I really want to hook up with a punk chick and your records could really help with that goal. Paul Westerberg is a genius. Seriously.

After seeing comments from the unemployed and someone going to Afghanistan, I realize I have no chance of winning, but my OCD for collecting cool records requires me to enter anyway.

I've always considered myself to be decently well versed in the St. Louis music scene, but apparently I am not. I have not heard of a single one of these bands, but I never turn down giving something new a fair shake. Basically, if I win this collection, I very well may be a fan of at least one band out of the lot. If that happens then I will most certainly buy future releases, go to any/all shows of the band(s) that I dig, etc. This lot could turn an ignorant adorer of local music into a serious follower of (possibly) great artists.

He found himself at the record store with the pink and black logo in the upbeat commercial neighborhood once again, having the conversation with himself that he'd had so many times before.

"Don't you dare," he told himself.

"You know that's why you're here in the first place," himself told himself.

Gingerly he made his way through the stacks, perusing an item here and there along the path as if it held his actual interest, but deep inside he knew where he was really headed, and so did anyone who'd witnessed him at this game before, or anyone that took special notice of the way his eyes shifted to another part of the store. Slowly, eventually, tempering his every caprice to dart straight to the local punk rock record label's catalogue end display, he more or less did so anyway.

Upon his arrival there, with ravenous abandon he held the thin yet somehow massive vinyl in his hands, each piece in turn, one by one, feeling its impossible weight (sometimes impossibly light, sometimes impossibly heavy). Reading the track listings, exploring every inch of the artwork, even peering inside the sleeves to see what kinds of inserts or colored wax might be in store...yes, this was the best part of his day. When caught by the light in the right way, he could see his own fingerprints (or were they?) from his previous visits on the plastic outer shells. And then...the inevitable.

That little white sticker with the black-stamped type. He knew that what he held in his hands was worth every penny and more, and that the ultimate recipients of said pennies were honorable people, deserving of any good that came to them. People fighting the good fight, doing the good work that so few were willing to do in the age of recessions and digital downloads and Napsterizing the Lime-wire (though he didn't fully understand the meaning of any of these terms). The kinds of creatively entrepreneurial people that would eventually be responsible for the end of the economic mess of the day. People, he liked to think, like himself. Friends of his, for all intents and purposes, if only he knew them personally. And he felt hurt--real physical pain, not just the arbitrary emotional hurt of heartbreak and yearning--when he had to put them all back, and clench his teeth, and his fists, and walk away.

Yet in the end he despaired not, for he was well familiar with the tenets of patience and hope, and adhered to them faithfully. He knew one day his luck would shine like the first glimpse of starlight on a darkened winter evening. Until that day, he would continue the daily sojourn of longing and he would pine; for to pine was, in his experience, to live.

These are the things, literal and metaphorical, that 18 months of joblessness do to a man.
