Ten St. Louis City Bars Where You Now *Can't* Smoke Indoors

Categories: List-O-Rama

Walking into a bar in St. Louis now, your nostrils might have a little trouble adjusting to the smell. With the new smoke-free law, formerly hazy bars and restaurants are now places where all five senses can function without environmental interference. (Without that smoke smell though...well, it's a pity those old Smoke-Eaters don't do anything about the faint aroma of farts lingering in the air.) Have you been avoiding your local watering hole because of the smoke? New year, new law, no excuses not to explore the places you once eschewed. Been to any more newly smoke-free bars in the city? Drop a line in the comments.

Upstairs Lounge
3131 South Grand Avenue
Once a smoky den with practically opaque air, walking into Upstairs on a Monday night feels a little surreal sans fog--you can actually see faces. Though without the busy-making aspect of cigarettes, everyone looks a little bored -- at least until 1 a.m., when the serious dancing gets underway.

Jack Patrick's
1000 Olive Street

The Bleeding Deacon
4123 Chippewa Street
Since its arrival on the South-side scene in 2008, the Bleeding Deacon has been a smoky sanctuary for the punk rock crowd. However, we're overjoyed to see the place go smoke-free because damn, their food rules. If you've never stepped in the Deacon before, it's time to meet your new favorite pub.

I'm happy to hear the Bleeding Deacon went smoke free. Love the food (and the jukebox). Hated the smoke.

Hammerstone's in Soulard is smoke free. It's great. We no longer get home and immediately run downstairs to strip off smoky clothes to throw them in the washing machine.

Pat's Bar & Grill at Tamm and Oakland is non smoking

The owner was one of the strongest ban opponents. I think the "over 21" requirement is what is stopping his place from being exempt.

Brennan's is currently smoke-free, but in the process of installing a private cigar club.

Poor old Bill Hannegan, still beating this dead horse. The ban is working just fine in Ohio and it will work fine in St. Louis, too. For the 80% of adults that are non-smokers, this is a wonderful step forward.

"...it's a pity those old Smoke-Eaters don't do anything about the faint aroma of farts lingering in the air." Actually the air cleaners at Herbie's can still eat up that objectionable faint aroma as they once did the smoke.

As far as noncompliance, I won't ever name any names, but one Northside bar told us they would not bother opposing the ban at City Hall since such restrictions "won't be enforced up here".

bill, i'm not quite sure which bars are too big. we're still waiting for the list from the city. so far, all the bars i've been too have been compliant with the signage, etc. sandrina's, which is still waiting for it's exemption, is not allowing smoking until they receive the official word. i think any non-compliance news will travel very quickly.

Thanks Diana. Pam Walker told us that places which make good faith applications can continue to allow smoking. The law automatically exempts them and the health department just certifies the already existing exemption. That struck me a very reasonable on her part.

Diana, do you know which bars were too big to qualify for an exemption and which served too much food? The food percentage rule is really suspect since it isn't in the law.

Don't count on this list folks. There is gonna be a lot of noncompliance in the City. Just as Ohio's strict ban doesn't stop the owner from imposing his wishes:

Also, Bill, the ones included in this list we've checked out and verified as ones that have gone non-smoking; it's not theoretical or ones we suspect will go non-smoking under the terms of the ordinance.
