So, Who Do You Want to See Nominated for the 2011 RFT Music Awards?

Categories: Music Awards

Yes, you read that subject heading right: We are about three months out from the 2011 RFT Music Showcase, which is taking place on Saturday, June 4, on Washington Avenue. More details on this are TBA, once we know more. As every year, however, the music showcase features bands, musicians and artists nominated for RFT Music Awards. (The showcase doesn't have an open application process, unfortunately.)

Like the good little organized Virgo that she is, A to Z is already thinking about this year's ballot (seriously), and wanted to open up thoughts to the general public. Who should get nominations this year? Who's had a really exceptional year, music-wise? What categories should be futzed with/changed -- and if so, what should the alternatives be? Don't just complain or grumble that something was wrong or that something sucked -- some feedback why it didn't work, and what could be different this year, would be helpful. ALSO NOTE: This is limited to St. Louis/regional artists only. Don't nominate national acts.

To be clear, A to Z takes these fan-generated comments/suggestions of bands/musicians and combines them with input from writers and other music community regulars when we cobble together a ballot of music awards nominees. It's not a one-person job or nominating process.

Note: Do not spam the comments with street-teaming. We know bands post this to Facebook or Twitter and tell fans to go have their say. That will not help; it'll just be annoying. Give us good, measured reasons why your favorite band is the best.

To spur on conversation, I've included last year's categories and winners below. Otherwise, comment away!

I'd love to see you select Sinfinis for the Best Electronic Artist/Band and Mary Elizabeth Bell for the Best Female Vocalist. They have a wonderfully eerie electro-pop sound with that sweet, sultry voice that only Mary Elizabeth can deliver. They definitely deserve a shot on the list!!!

My nomination for Best Vocalist (Male) would be Scott Buchanan. Not only is he dedicated to the groups he's involved in, he shows great vocal range & control. Not to mention he has great character & an engaging energy!! Everyone should check out Flannel or Torn, either way you will not be disappointed!!

First off, yes indeed, agreed that M.E. Bell and Sinfinis should be a definite for Best Electronic Artist. She's been working her ass off to get her name and music out there, and it is indeed the most unique project since Collaborateur. However, I do think the category should be broken down into two separate ones: Best Ambient Electronic and Best Dance Electronic, because I don't feel it's fair to be lumping everything deemed "electronic", when hip hop and rock are being split into multiple sub genres.

Second of all, there should be a Best Hard Rock category separate from Best Metal/Thrash, because I've seen much confusion of the two grouped into the latter. That said, as much as I love MURDER HAPPENS, and that they are indeed deserving of their win last year, they are NOT an Electronic band, and I think that their members would much agree. While it is the basis of their sound, they are a very Metal-driven project, which means I nominate them for best Metal/Thrash.

Best Experimental - Buxom Space Fish. Nikki Fisher's a one-woman (with occasional collaborators) dark electronic powerhouse who blends in elements of all areas of industrial, electronica, and metal. It's high energy and extremely technical, and as she states, she is NOT a Dj!

Best Newcomer - Ellen the Felon. Ellen is THE premier rock cabaret artist of St. Louis. As a promoter, I've rarely seen a local artist who is such a chameleon that she can open for just about ANY band. She's that talented. She's also easy on the eyes.

Best DJ - DJ Forensic/Joe Bobnick. Joe's THE BEST Electronica/House/Industrial/Trance Dj I've worked with in my ten years. He's a regular at the ANTHEM event every month, and has taken part at RAPTURE, SUBVERSION, and CONSPIRACY on a regular basis. His choice of tracks and his flow are unmatched, and he's a nice and humble guy to boot.

Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist (Group or Collective) - Forty 'Til Five. As a rap-hater, these guys have done the impossible, which is get my attention. They're two goofy white dudes rapping about trying to live the big dream like any O.G., and they're FUN. They've been hosting the Loop Underground for years, and barely get the recognition.

Best local rock legend - Steve Scorfina. Steve was a member of Pavlov's Dog, and has been writing some really great blues-oriented rock in the past so many years. Let's give credit where it's due. This man deserves a star on the U. City Walk of Fame.

Do we have a category for Best Local (Independent) Promoter? If not, there should be one, and I nominate Carrie Harris (The Crack Fox) and Mike Cracchiolo (The Firebird). They've been working their asses off to offer St. Louis two venues that are outside the norm and treat their artists with respect (which is something lacking with certain venues I won't name *cough cough* - rhymes with RUBAR).

Best Electronic Artist/Band-Sinfinis

They always put on one hell of a sexy and artistic show. I can never take my eyes off the female singer and I always seem to perform at the coolest that help make St. Louis a happening town. Their shows at Koken Art Factory for Alice In Wonderland and Naughti Gras have left me drooling like an idiot.

I would like to nominate Sinfinis for Best Electronic Artist. Did Mary Elizabeth Bell post this on her Facebook? Yes. Does that in ANY way change the fact that she and her band are MORE than deserving of the recognition? No! Sinfinis is that very rare breed of band. They connect with the listener on both an intellectual and emotional basis. The music is well-crafted, expertly blended, and unique. It is also in turns warm, heart-wrenching, and hopeful. It's nearly impossible to describe the velvety delight of Mary's voice. This is an outstanding, fresh, innovative group, and deserves to be noticed.

Picks for BEST ELECTRONIC ARTIST/BAND

Sinfinis : Sultry downtempo music with enchanting vocals, stellar male/female harmonies. They also handle heavier tunes nicely, and do a beautiful bit of jazz, too.

AlphaStatic : They've got hard-hitting, danceable beats which sometimes include guest vocalists.

Buz : outstanding instrumental stuff, some of it mind-blowing in its complexity

Buxom Space Fish : makes you wanna dance through the zombie apocalypse

Spiral-Shaped Mind : This solo artist will have you wondering whether you're trapped inside a video game, or a B-movie.

.e : She creates very unique, eclectic stuff from unexpected sources.

Lisa Huffman for Best Female Vocalist. She nails Panic Attack's super-rock melodies with both power and precision. On hearing her perform live, you might think that her voice will start to wear thin by the end of the set, but you'll find that you were terribly wrong.
