Alice Cooper's having a pretty good week. On Monday night, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (He wore a snake for the occasion.) And this morning, he announced the June 2011 release of a monster (pun intended) boxed set, called Old School 1964-1974. Packaged in a replica school-desk box -- see it to the right -- the set has four CDs, a DVD, a "bootleg vinyl" and a 7-inch, along with a book, a 64-page booklet and other assorted goodies. (A list of the specs can be found below.) Even cooler, though: One of the CDs (and the "bootleg vinyl") is a 1971 show from the "Killer" tour, recorded right in St. Louis. This appears to be the December 17, 1971 show at the St. Louis Arena, a widely bootlegged show. The set isn't cheap; it retails for $260. But for fans, it's a goldmine.

[Note from commenter Tom C.: The Cooper show wasn't quite at the St. Louis Arena, but "at the Arena Annex, a building to the east side where the Blues parked their cars. Shows there were general admission and and if you got there early enough, you sat on a ratty old piece of carpet instead of the concrete floor. The openers were Pacific Gas & Electric and Dust."]

I was also at the Arena Annex show with a couple of college friends. My Mom bought us tickets as a surprise...what a cool gal! We sat next to a group of dwarves (I know that's not politically correct, but they told us "Hey, we're DWARVES!"). They had bags of wine to share and during the show they would sit on their girlfriends' shoulders to see. Really nice guys. The show was damn good. Dust was a proto-metal three-piece band, the bassist and guitarist kept charging back and forth across the stage, swinging their hair. Hey, they were before their time. PG&E was OK, they were like a West-Coast version of Chicago with a horn section. Alice was outstanding, did a bunch of stunts, got out the python, all that stuff. His band was really good, although the sound was pretty bad. It was an old metal building with a concrete floor, after all.We were glad we went. Now I guess I should find a way to get the recording without buying that huge box set...

Now that Alice Cooper plays golf and performs at concerts for good causes, we forget the attitude of the old band. On my Rockaeology blog at http://bit.ly/iaFRn2 drummer Neal Smith says, “When we had a successful album, we wanted to throw it back. We had a bad attitude – which is good for rock n’ roll. If another band had long hair – we had longer hair. We wanted to look more outrageous than anyone out there. We were really pushing the limits with our image. I loved it.”
