Tonight: Emeralds' John Elliott at Floating Laboratories
Call the last few days the unofficial kick off of the stellar spring line-up--despite today's unexpected nuclear fallout slushy snowfall, your social life may be about to experience a nice thaw.
It's been a good couple of days for mind-altering psychedelia. On Friday, Chicago's Cave played an insane set with a stacked bill--Ghost Ice, Bikini Acid and Skarekrau Radio, while at Pig Slop, Syna So Pro held down the fort at Mangia. If you missed those, however, fear not: Tonight, John Elliott of experimental Cleveland trio Emeralds performs at Floating Laboratories as Outer Space. Any Emeralds side project would draw a rabid crowd in New York or Chicago, but here in St. Louis you'll be able to check Outer Space out without throwing elbows.
Outer Space follows the same ambient formula of Emeralds, with the same electronic waterfalls, delicate arpeggios and prismatic soundscapes all rendered gracefully through a collection of vintage analog synthesizers. It sounds like the birth of a red dwarf star, and sort of feels like being slowly pulled through the birth canal of a black hole, only awesomer.
St. Louis' Raglani and Elliott are good friends, and the pair put out an incredibly solid split last year on Nihilist Records. If the planets align, there might even be a few copies of the limited release for purchase, so bring your allowance, as well as $5 to get in. Jeremy Kannapell did the psychotropic collage art for the Rags/Outer Space split, and he'll be on hand tonight for a rare live collaboration with Raglani. Moth Cock and Drainolith open the set.
