HaikuLou Wants You to Commit Your Concert-Going Experiences to Poetry

Live music enthusiast and rapier wit Jamie Lees had an idea for chronicling the former. She brought her idea to Matt Harnish of Vintage Vinyl and Bunnygrunt fame, and he co-signed. The idea: HaikuLou, wherein they, their friends and you (if you want) recap their experience at a show in three terse lines of Japanese poetry. We asked Lees why she decided to start this bad boy and how you can contribute. Answers to both can be found below.

Haikus may be, as described by some here at the RFT, the trendy cupcakes of the written word, but this is a project worth watching. Mostly for the personalities behind it (Rob Severson is on board, you should all be glad to know). And now to Lees, who mercifully did not respond to our questions in meter.

Kiernan Maletsky: How did you get this idea?

Jamie Lees: My brain will never be still. I think of dumb little life-documenting projects like this all the time, but rarely follow through. But HaikuLou seemed like something that would be fun for my friends, too. Matt was into it right away and we have a whole huge accumulation of talented friends- it's nice to put them to work.

Why haikus?

I like structure. And I like how they force you to be succinct; if the reviews were just open format this thing would have the potential to impose actual responsibility and time suckage. I have other writing to do and Matt is busy with the tons of stuff he does, so we're not down with getting too involved.

Which ones so far are by you and which are by Matt?

That's a secret! We've already posted one by a guest writer and set up about 10 of our friends to post on the site. We all like different kinds of bands/venues, so hopefully HaikuLou will be pretty diverse.

Anything else you'd like folks to know about this?

Email us at haikulou314 AT gmail.com and we'll post your show review. Probably eventually, at least. This is a very lazy kinda project.
