David Cook Sings "Don't You Forget About Me," America Tries To Remember

Dear Mr. Vernon, you see us as a pop star, a pop star, a pop star, a pop star, and a pop star...
David Cook's decision to cover "Don't You Forget About Me," currently the official "send-off" song of season season of American Idol, was as an especially gutsy move for an alum of a show that has, for a decade now, created a legion of temporary stars who are eventually forgotten about.

Since his decision to cover it has caused me to (at least for the moment) remember him, David Cook should be commended for his decision to address the fundamental question of his career head on. (If Barack Obama had sung "Born in the USA" during his inaugural address that pernicious rumor about his having never been a marginalized Vietnam veteran would have fizzled out much earlier.)

What is it that makes these ready-made almost-stars so easy to not not-forget about? I've been on and off the Idol wagon too patchily to claim any expertise in the area, but it seems that in 2011 we simply know too plainly what an Idol winner does for the people who vie for it to do anything else.

Nobody who reaches the end of the Idol road is legitimately anything except an Idol figure. If he rocks, he's not a rock star so much as The Rocker; if she might go into country later she's a transplant, a crossover star who's not crossing over from anything in particular. The embarrassing poses teenagers shift between on their way to becoming fully fledged, "authentic" musical icons in their mid-twenties are on display from week to week. To bring it back to The Breakfast Club, Idol contestants don't just have to fit into neatly compartmentalized visions of themselves, they have to be, one after the other, a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal, and because of the flatly artificial way in which we're getting to know them they don't do a particularly good job at any one 80s-movie-archetype.

I don't know if I have it in me, as a graduate student in the humanities, to feel depressed about some other institution that's churning out an excess of starry-eyed youths who are fully qualified to compete in a market--for the milquetoast, not-quite-rock solo star who's more likely to use violins than autotune--that no longer really exists. But there's something strangely earnest and endearing about one of them asking us to remember him in his natural language, the high-gloss, PG-rated pop single that increasingly few people speak fluently.

It's easy to criticize the various talent shows for pushing out soulless, overwrought, homogenous pop-stars Costco-style; it's easy to criticize them for that because it's exactly what they try to do. but Cook's eulogy for the near-misses is an unwitting reminder that, after 10 years of finalists, there are barely any homogenous pop-stars left.

I wonder if Mr. Moore realizes just how difficult it is to understand what he is attempting to say. I got the point but it wasn't easy. Perhaps he is trying to impress us with his writing talent but he is more successful at confusing us. Straightforward, clear and succinct would be preferred.

Looking at the comments here, I suppose you are better informed on the career and talent of David Cook than when you wrote this. Now you know that the boot song was not chosen by David but he was the one they asked to do it. And he does have a platinum album to his credit and a new one to be out soon. Idol was a big boost to his career, but he was going to get to the top eventually anyway, his incredible voice and talent can't be denied. I suggest that you get yourself to a David Cook concert during the upcoming tour and take a listen to Analog Heart, David's pre-idol award winning indie cd. and yes, David does covers and he does them so well that the original is then a pale copy. Check out the stats -  sales of the artists he covers always show a marked increase. and check out the pay it back factor - David's opening acts during the 2009 tour - before they charted - Ryan Star, GRO, Need to Breathe, the Script...

Dan Moore:" I don't need to know what I'm writing about, so long as I sound clever. Truth, substance, and accuracy are not critical to my job. I'm an authority on David Cook because I asked around my (a-hem- two doofuss) friends, and they never heard of him. "

Wow, you should stick to writing articles about subject matter more familiar to you. DAVID COOK is my favorite Idol contestant EVER. I haven't watched every year, but was glued to the tube Cookies season. Look up some of his work before Idol........excellent. His CD will go platinum.......mark my words. Also, are you disparaging the work of several Idol alumni....Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtrey, Jennifer Hudson, and others who have gone to work in the music industry (not as visible, but still loved by their fans). I would list a few more,  but need to go read someone's article who knows from whence they speak......

I just wish that bloggers/journalists and the like would do a little research before they sit down to write about something they know little about. Maybe then they wouldn't look like an ass, and the fans of whoever they are writing about wouldn't have to comment and make themselves look like asses as well.

I read your article, you obviously haven't done your research on David Cook as a real journalist should, or you would have found a young, very talented musician/songwriter, who entered idol on a "whim" and his talent shone through to 54 million people to win the show.  All the comments are from true David Cook fans and there are a plethora of us.  Yes, David Cook will never be forgotten.

Now that I have cooled off a bit, I can give Dan a wee bit of credit for trying to amuse me. It is too bad he failed, by doing no research, as if facts mean nothing. He has no idea what he is missing. Maybe we can encourage him to visit David Cook Official and check this ARTIST out!

Wow... I cant believe your thought process?  David Cook was amazing on  Idol last night!

This author is an idiot...admits he is not an expert but fails to do any research at all on the subject of David Cook or AI in general...Get a real job...

Before posting an article with wrong, baseless statements and comments about someone whose talent as a singer and composer is recognized within the music scenery, you should inform yourself better.

IMO, the article is spot on on many levels and wrong on many levels too.  And I'll take the time to comment. To be fair with the writer, the comparison between "The Breakfast Club" and AI's contestants was quite appropriate and what he commented on today's music business in general too. There's no doubt that these teenagers are being packaged to fit compartmentalized niches to yield quick money. That's why it's very unfortunate that this season AI lowered the age limit even more!Having said this, the author should check his facts regarding David Cook. First off, as some already noted, DYAM was selected by Idol's producers for David to sing and in no way it is HIM asking to be remembered (not necessary at all, I can assure you. He'll never be forgotten). Secondly, if there's an AI alumnus who embodies what an idol is, that's David Cook. And not only from the point of view of the kind of music he sings/writes but as a person. He has the brains, he has the mouth-in-cheek personality, he has the heart and he's earnest and endearing but not in the way the author implies. Dan, if you are looking for a
rock solo star who's more likely to use violins than autotune
you can find it in David. Just check any of his live concerts, his platinum selling album and his new album "This Loud Morning" due June 28th. You may be surprised when you listen to a unique voice, an amazing band and some "theremins, sitars, violins, piano, etc." Just sayin'

I can guarantee that you and this lame article will long be forgotten while David Cook and his amazing music will continue to be remembered and loved for many many years to come. Its sad when someone who knows so little (and dare I even say nothing) about a person (both his music and him as a human being) yet tries to "sum up" who he is based on a card board cut out of typical Idol winners. David is far from typical. He is an extraordinary man and the talent he possesses in his pinky, one (you) could never duplicate in an entire lifetime. Trust and believe... David Cook will NEVER be forgotten! ...................... who are you again?

I happen to love DCook.  I did however, find your tie to the Idol contenstents and the Breakfast Club characters hysterical and spot on.  Maybe the other comments are from those that were not yet born when the movie was in theaters.

I think the key phrase in this blog is this, "I've been on and off the Idol wagon too patchily to claim any expertise in the area,"

When you start your article by stating you do not know what you are talking about, then anything after that sentence should be disregarded as the ramblings of an idiot...

You got it! We know you will not be forgotten, as the biggest f*ckup, no research idiot!

David took his Idol crown for what it's worth, then proceeded to work his ass off co-writing and touring his platinum album and two platinum singles. His fans have not forgotten about him and never will. We've been on the edge of our seats for a year and a half waitng for his sophomore album.Your second sentence claims no expertise, then you go on to comment like you are indeed the expert. Any Idol winners who may have been forgotten about, probably were not worth a damn to begin with. DYFAM was chosen for David by Idol  to perform as the exit song. If you took the time to do your homework, you'd know that. Dont know why I've even wasted my time replying your drivel.

I don't want to nitpic but DC got 54,000,000 million votes and Archie got 44,000,000 votes. Point taken though, David is not forgotten and never will be.

If you go back... you will see and  hear David Cook won by a "landslide" of 12 million votes

He got 12 million votes MORE than Archie...

I think I'll forget about you. Your blog is typical of today's obfuscating "rock criticism" that would rather bloviate than make thoughtful, useful comments about artistry. Clearly you do not know David Cook's work before or after Idol. Selling platinum seems to me to, by definition, to  not have been forgotten. His new album, This Loud Morning, is much anticipated.

WTF does this even mean??  David Cook was asked to sing the ""Boot" song!  I strongly doubt 12,000.000 who voted for the BEST Idol ever need any reminder of his awesome talents.... #DYFAM!
