SebastiAn, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Old 97's: This Week's New Releases
Each Tuesday, record-store clerks unpack boxes of albums and restock shelves with the latest releases. This week brings an abundance of notable albums, including new stuff from alt-country outfit Old 97's, French electro artist SebastiAn and West coast psychedelics Jackie-O Motherfucker.
French electro artist SebastiAn churns out 22 tracks in just 51 minutes on Total, his debut full-length studio effort. Total features collaborations with Mayer Hawthorne on "Love in Motion" and MIA on "C.T.F.O." Justice's Gaspard Auge produced "Tetra." Though Total is undoubtedly an electro album, Sebastian successfully crosses over genres with some traditional Middle Eastern beats.
Having released fifteen albums in a span of sixteen years, Portland experimental outfit Jackie-O Motherfucker adds Earth Sound System to its growing list of studio efforts. "Bring It To Me" has sedated guitars and sleepy-tempoed tempos, while "Where We Go" starts off with a dictating cadence, a muddy bassline and shivering, echoed vocals. The entire album is currently streaming at Spinner.
Texas alt-country rockers the Old 97's is releasing its ninth studio album, The Grand Theater, Volume Two. The album is a continuation of the sessions that were heard on The Grand Theater, Volume One making it more of a sort of accumulation of material rather than an album. However, that does not take away from overall music quality, though some may argue that Volume One was satisfactory on its own. Though they will not be playing in St. Louis this summer, the Old 97's will play in Chicago on July 18 and 19 at Lincoln Hall and in Kansas City on July 21 at Crossroads.
