Adele's Tour Rider: Mandatory Charity and Absolutely No North American Beer

Categories: Fiesta!

adele_pr-1-500x3631.jpeg
The Smoking Gun has tracked down a copy of Adele's rider for a North American tour that has since been cancelled due to throat surgery. Whenever she does make it over here, much of this is likely to remain in place, including a pagelong stipulation that everyone on the guest list, whether they got there through the band, the promoter, the venue or any other way, must make a minimum $20 donation to the Stillborn and Neonatal Death Charity (SANDS) based in the UK.

Fair enough -- the Tour Manager goes on to explain that the policy raised $13,000 on a European tour and this is a particularly elegant solution to the sometimes-tricky culture of guest-list favor. What we refuse to abide is her Xenophobic beer policy: "12x selection of bottles of best quality European lager beer. ie Becks, Stella Artois, Peroni etc North American beer is NOT acceptable." Italics theirs. We don't even need to tell you: If Adele thinks Becks is superior to pretty much any beer released by a massive, nationwide culture of microbrews, then we cannot be friends. Whatever, Adele: More Schlafly Christmas Ale for us. The full rider is below.

I guess she's never been to Wisconsin!  (And I'm not talking about Miller.  Even I think that tastes like piss) Seriously, which North American beers has she actually tried?  Budweiser, Coors, Miller, etc?  How about giving some local independent breweries a shot?  I think she'd be surprised.

I think this misconception stems from the fact that most wonderful american beers you are unable to find in say Britain.  No Dogfish head in Liverpool because Liverpool makes their own quite well.  Having said that, I'm pretty sure when Adele is reaching for a beer in Orlando, the promoters there would think that Budweiser or something else god awful would constitute beer, when those in the Pacific North West or Cali would never touch the swill.  It's like Americans asking for McDonalds in Britain because we have no idea that fish and Chips are fast food there.

matt

the only british isles brewers i'm aware of that make american style craft beer (which is a world apart from the british camra tradition) is brewdog.  it's just a very different beast.

Sorry, but North American beer is simply bad. Its weak Gnats piss when compared to any number of European Beers. Peroni for example is quite brilliant. The taste, the aroma and the alcohol content are superb and when compared to Budweiser there is no competition. Europeans have been brewing beer for thousands of yaers and we're very good at it. While some beers we make are terrible, if its our best verses your best then there's no contest. Go on and try a peroni and you might understand where im coming from.

Beer Expert.
Beer Expert.

Their are countless American Breweries that make worldclass beers. Stone, Sierra Nevada, Cigar City, Anchor Steam, New Belgium, Dogfish Head, Victory... I could list several hundred. If she wants a good lager she should try Victory Prima Pils, or Trumer Pils, Or Full Sail Session Lager.

I actually find some Irony in the beer choices she made because EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is modeled after Premium American Lager. They just have more malt.

peroni is just another lawnmower beer.

Jj_scott
Jj_scott

Is this talking about major brews only?  Because there are COUNTLESS micro brews that would trounce any major brewhouses best offerings.  Peroni is great compared to Bud or something else as mainstream, but don't compare your Peroni to our trailer trash beers and feel proud when it's better.

Boyne101

You obvious haven't realized that the American beer scene has changed a lot in the last 20 years.  Go try some Dogfish head or even a Sierra Nevada then come back and talk to me.

American mainstream beer is indeed "watery", but your experience of them seems extremely limited.  Why don't you rate our burgers based on McDonald's as well?  Just because you don't know where to look for something doesn't mean something doesn't exsist.  I rate European beer above American "mainstream" lager, but below American craft brews.

If you guys think "American Beer" is this macro brewed, light lager garbage like Budweiser, Coors, and Miller...you're simply eating the bull that television commercials are feeding you.  After trying some of the beers from breweries like Founders, Southern Tier, Troegs etc., you'll never go back to that Peroni nonsense.

I have to agree with Adam. American beer is by far the worst. I travel the world regularly and in most countries I can get a decent beer except that is America. It is so bad it has to be almost frozen to drink it. They even freeze the glass. Even third world countries produce better beer. If Sam Adams is the best of American then the situation is even worse than I thought I'm sure thats just a mix of sugar and water.

Really?
Really?

Try a Sam Adams and go f*ck yourself, teabag.

Lol, your reply is immature and just shows the level of education you have. You are saying this hiding behind a level of anonymity that you feel protects you and as such say things you would never say to someone face. If you would say it to someones face then im guessing your a feeble attempt at a human being. So much for the freedom of speec that you hold so dear.

Sam Adams is okay.  Come to Wisconsin and drink a Fat Squirrel!  They don't even ship it out of the state.

Must be a S L O W news day when this news has to get rehashed.  If you sell more than 4 million copies of one record in one country (as reported by the RIAA), you can ask for whatever the hell you like.  I would suspect there are quite a few American acts that perform internationally, that request, nay, demand only AB.   She has her favorite beer, who cares!

DUFFMAN!

Going through your comment sentence by sentence:1. Rehashed? It was published by The Smoking Gun just a few days ago.2. This blog post isn't disputing that she's in a position to make such a demand; it's criticizing this particular demand.3. Perhaps4a. Favorite beer (singular)? The rider mentions THREE and then adds ETC!4b. We care. So fuck off.

"Good quality local lager" is reasonable.  I'd sure put that on my rider if I had one.

Don't they make Stella Artois in Saint Louis, in good ol' North America, now?

The band and crew buses do get 36 bottles of good quality local lager (chilled) (NOT Budweiser, Miller or similar "National" brand).

So, apparently her band and crew are okay with drinking actually good beer.
