Finding time to pursue a passion outside of a profession can be a strenuous venture. But Guster guitarist and vocalist Adam Gardner has found a way to combine his passion for sustainability with his rock star vocation. Teaming up with his environmentalist wife, Lauren Sullivan, he created Reverb. Beginning in 2004, Reverb has been working towards educating musicians and their fans on environmental suitability. Working with acts like Dave Matthews Band and Janelle Monae, the organization creates a custom-made greening guide to help make a tour more environmentally friendly. Guster will be playing at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Boulevard, 314-533-9900 tonight as part of its Acoustic Tour. Of course, this tour is unplugged to minimize the use of electricity and conserve energy.

Speaking with Gardner via telephone, RFT Music asked the musician for the Five Things bands can do to become more Earth conscious.

1. Fuel - "For the bands, we look at the fuel they are using in their vehicles. Use biodiesel as much as possible."

2. Water - "A typical request from bands is cases and cases of plastic bottled water. Try reusable water bottles. Sure that water bottle may cost you 10 bucks or 15 bucks, but versus buying bottled water, that's an ongoing expense. And it creates waste."

3. Food - "In some cases, we try to source food from local farms in each town the band in playing. Instead of having food carted from 2,000 miles away."

4. Reduce Waste - "Use re-usable china and silverware instead of disposable stuff."

5. Engage Your Fans - "[Reverb's] approach is dual. One is cleaning up [the band's] act, and the other is using that example to help educate your fans. [Bands] definitely have to lead by example. Let people know what you're doing and it easy for people to follow that example. Reach out to folks ahead of time. [Guster] will put out an e-mail blast or do some social network message."
