LouFest 2011
The LouFest 2012 Lineup is here: the Flaming Lips and Girl Talk get top billing and there's plenty of depth. Dinosaur Jr. and Cotton Mather for you reunion fans. King Tuff, Little Barrie and THEESatisfaction for those looking for new sounds. Cults and Hacienda will act as a musical speedramp to get you headed into the late sets with some energy.

You can buy two-day early bird passes now for $60. LouFest will be held this year on August 25 and 26 in Forest Park -- the entire lineup is below. What do you think? Overall we're excited.

Initial Reactions

-This is a more uptempo lineup than in years past. Perhaps the success of the !!! set is partially to thank?

-COTTON MATHER IS BACK AND COMING TO ST. LOUIS

-Would have loved to see some more hip-hop here (a local, perhaps?), but THEESatisfaction will be great.

-Sometimes we think the Flaming Lips live show (especially at festivals) is a little taken for granted. We've even gone in feeling ho-hum once or twice. But make no mistake: This is the kind of band that causes people to hold music as a religion, particularly if you haven't seen it in a while.

-There's not as much love for up-and-coming St. Louis bands (Sleepy Kitty and the Pernikoff Brothers made the cut) as in years past, but we do get sets from Son Volt (featuring local god Jay Farrar) and honorary hometown boys Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

-That new Dr. Dog record is awesome and it will sound even better out on the lawn in the heat of summer.

A Brief Introduction:

Flaming Lips

Newest Release: "Now I Understand." It's a song with lyrics generated by Siri, and that is roughly the 100th strangest thing this band has done in the last year. There's a collaboration album coming on Record Store Day called The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends, which includes joint efforts with Ke$ha, Jim James, Lightning Bolt, Erykah Badu and plenty others. That's maybe 86.
Hometown: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Last Time in St. Louis: September 17, 2010 at the Pageant. Review, photos and setlist are here.

Girl Talk

Newest Release: Sort of irrelevant, really -- the latest hit's chorus with, I don't know, the drum sample from "Paid in Full" underneath.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Last Time in St. Louis: January 18, 2011 at the Pageant. Review, photos and setlist are here.

As it may seem as much as a surprise to you as it is me, everyone I have talked to is more excited about Girl Talk than The Flaming Lips!!! That is wild, but I have never seen the lips before, where most of my friends have. I am looking forward to both!

LouFest is in restraint-of-trade of MUNY at the 'butt' end of the travel and vacation season as free Shakespeare and Twilight Tuesdays are in restraint-of trade-of MUNY at the front end.The caused loss is about $150 million in early season and late season travel for entertainment. That's $75 million not coming here-going to other cities because they offer more and better and $75 million taken by St. Louisans to other places because they want more and better. This is especially fortunate for Kansas City with its big downtown of music arts and culture and their Starlight Theater which whose operation is not restrained. St. Louis is living out a death wish.

Looking forward to seeing the Lips outdoors in Forest Park, they have never dissapointed at The Pageant.  I guess the organizers didn't see that Girl Talk and Dr. Dog were also on the bill for the July Forecastle Festival in Louisville.  Might make it harder to get fans from eastern part of the region.  Hopefully GT and DD put on a good show in The Ville so i'll be more excited to see them in The Lou.

BEST LINE UP EVER. Perfect for this venue, this city, and it's crowd. It's plenty diverse, don't let the nay-sayers fool anyone, GIRL TALK will bring the kind of excitement this fest needs, while Dr. Dog, Hacienda, THEESatisfaction, bring the cool kids, and everyone will go crazy for The Flaming Lips. Well done Lou. Haters gonna hate.

I must preface this by saying that I do love Loufest and do want to support it. I love the fact that St Louis has its own music festival and want that to continue. So any criticism I have is meant to be constructive.

But the lineup for this year is very very disappointing and is far far weaker than the first 2 years of the festival, which I did love. Flaming Lips is a great grab for a headliner, but the rest of the lineup is weak. There are no other real big-name acts nor are there any real up and coming buzz bands. A lot of the band feel like retreads. These are the same bands that have played in St Louis the past couple of years. And none of them excite me. Nor will any of these bands (besides Lips) inspire people outside St Louis to travel here for them.

I know I am in the minority in this feeling as Dr Dog, Dawes, and especially Son Volt have a huge following in this city. And I have a suspicion that because of them and Lips, the festival will actually attract a bigger crowd than before. But its all very disappointing still for me because of the general blandness of the lineup.

The worst offense though is having Girl Talk as a headliner. This is a horrible, terrible, indefensible choice. The only people who are excited by this are people who want to see teenagers raving it up.

I want to end this on a positive note though. I am looking forward to Phantogram. And THEESatisfaction is good as well. And I certainly respect grabbing Dino Jr. Love you Loufest...

Understand the sentiment... but you have to think about it in rational terms. It's either the Flaming Lips or 5-7 smaller / up-and-comers.... this is a statement for the future of the festival I think. The Lips will be a great anchor for future versions that will draw a better mix.

Either way it's a good step forward hopefully. Cults are a dark horse here I think.

A DJ as a headliner?Boooooooo....Can't believe so many people have fallen for Girl Talk. What a scam!

Flaming Lips are a much bigger pull than most would have expected. May not have the depth of 2011 but can't see how anyone could complain. Should be a helluva time.
