The Ten Best Shows In St. Louis This Weekend: December 7 to 9

The Phonocaptors will ride again Friday night at Off Broadway.
It's my byline; we're doing what I want this week. And I want to bring back the word of the day, which just happens to be Bollix. Seriously! That's how you spell "bullshit" in British. So here we here, a Bollix fill-in weekend post from your esteemed music editor. Shouldn't it be "Bollocks"? Ah, who am I to question the Word of the Day web site I just Googled. Bollix it is.

Conventionally, December and January are the most bollix stretch of shows of the year. And even though we're in the thick of it now, there are plenty of offerings you'd be an arse to pass up. There's a new jam in town called Voce (it's connected to Maurizio's Pizza). Tonight they'll open up with the brand new Breaks, Best New Band Foxing and the estimable Billy Schuh, and on Saturday it's a bunch of punks playing Random Band for your amusement. Should be a colourful time. The Phonocaptors return from the grave tonight at Off Broadway on the occasion of the Incurables album release. If that means nothing to you, just know that you would be hard-pressed to find as dense an assortment of ace guitar work this side of a Dave Anderson show. Did you know that "do one's nut" is British slang for "become enraged"? There seems to be some conjugation issues there, but whatever. Are you doing your nut awaiting the rest of our picks? No more mucking about:

Friday, December 7

The Breaks, Foxing and Billy Schuh
@ Voce
8 p.m. | $5
The last two winners of RFT Music's Best New Band award will christen the new venue attached to Maurizio's Pizza. The Breaks will also be debuting a new lead singer (Arthur, from Arthur and the Librarian). Plus you get a set from Billy Schuh, Columbia scene legend, Foundry Field Recordings front man and Emergency Umbrella Records dude. Plus, you know, proximity to pizza! (KM)

The Incurables Record Release
@ Off Broadway
7 p.m. | $10 to $13
The Incurables' debut full-length is golden guitar heaven, and Jimmy Griffin's outfit doesn't play too often. Amazingly, that is only the second best reason to check this one out, behind the return of the Phonocaptors -- Jason Hutto's breakthrough rock band. (KM)

Jerome Gaynor / Shannon Knox Punk Art Show
@ Blank Space
7 p.m. | FREE
Jerome Gaynor -- Remember that name? If you were hip to social media in the city of St. Louis in the years 2002-2004 -- StlPunk.com, to be specific -- then you remember that Gaynor was the mastermind behind the website you spent so much time on. And therefore you remember the charming, subversive art that was a large part of the site's design (as well as Gaynor's notable comic endeavors). Art-show-mate and co-patriot Shannon Knox is a badass wandering punk-rock jill-of-all-trades that lays waste to artistic endeavors with inimitable skill and charm. The pairing of the two of them at Cherokee's Blank Space is sure to be a fun time had by all. (DH)

Saturday, December 8

Band Lotto Show
@ Voce
8:30 p.m. | $3
All of these bands were thrown together a month ago at random and will exist for this night only. Mean Mug has already played twice, technically, but the band can be forgiven for cheating since frontman Rob Ruzicka is the one who conceived of this names-drawn-out-of-hat show in the first place. Fun! (DH)

Celia's Yuletide Express
@ Schlafly Tap Room
9 p.m. | FREE
No one embodies the non-exclusionary, genuinely awesome portions of Holiday Cheer more effectively or consistently than Celia. You could not ask for a better ringleader for this soiree, and she'll have Nashville's Milktooth and our own pop gem-crafter Spectator in tow. (KM)
