Who the Hell Cares if Beyonce Lip-Synced the National Anthem at the Inauguration?

Barack Obama was inaugurated for his second term as President of these United States this Monday -- a day that notably was also a national holiday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. I'd wager that Dr. King would have seen this as a "win" -- a victory for the equality the man fought his entire life for, reflected in the highest echelons of our government. King's decades-long struggle for equal rights ended in his assassination, rendering him a martyr for the cause. Monday's inauguration could have been a beautiful, symbolic coda to this struggle and tragic death. Unfortunately, controversy shook the country to its very foundation when some dumb pop singer chose to mouth words over a backing track rather than actually sing them.

Or maybe, more appropriately: Who the hell gives a shit? Can we, as a country, seriously have our heads that far up our own asses? Has the cult of celebrity and the public's obsession with the stars really gotten this out of hand?

Now okay, granted, we're in the business of music news here -- it isn't hard-hitting stuff, and there are (apparently) more important things in the world (not to me, especially, but I digress). I'm not going to pretend to be too far above the fray, but the National Enquirer we are not. It just simply blows my mind that Beyonce's did-she-or-didn't-she lip-syncing situation is the biggest takeaway discussion that we have following this inauguration. Google-trending topic and whatnot. Twitters ablaze. Every single media outlet reporting on it. Seriously, who the hell cares?

This isn't even the first time this has happened. CBS news identified several similar examples:

-In 1991, Whitney Houston lip-synced her iconic interpretation of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl.

-Oscar-winner and former "American Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson did the same thing with the anthem at the Super Bowl in 2009.

-Faith Hill also performed to a backing track for "America The Beautiful" at the same event in 2009.

-At President Obama's first inauguration in 2009, Yo-Yo Ma's performance came into question over "hand syncing." The acclaimed cellist had said the instruments weren't working properly in the very cold weather.

First of all, Bitchonce has no class, period.  When she was stupid enough to sing Etta James's signature song with the blues singer sitting in the audience, it shed some light on her standards.  She has none.  I wonder how many people have lip synched the National Anthem?  I would rather hear Rosanne sing a live version.  She needs to go away.  I'm sick & tired of hearing about this bitch.

So far the only ones I have seen getting all butt hurt over this is FAUX "news" and the rest of the right wingers, just so they have something to complain about.

This is not a real issue.  But they want it to be.

Folks, simmer down. Beyonce doesn't have to prove anything to anybody. It's a well-documented fact that she can sing her ass off both live and in studio recordings. Her talent isn't the question here. Musicians know how tough it is to sing/play instruments at outdoor gigs in really cold temperatures...the vocal chords and hands just freeze up. Who wants to listen to cracked and strained notes during the National Anthem at the Inauguration all because of winter weather?? Smartly, Beyonce had a beautiful pre-recording of her OWN vocal performance just in case. For all we know, she may have had the flu or a sinus infection, or simply decided that it was too damned cold to risk singing live. They probably should have just disclosed the performance as pre-recorded on the TV screen or whatever, but that would take away from the grandeur of the moment, I guess.

Because it is fraud. That it is 'accepted' now, and 'no one should care' it is still fraud. If she did not try to make contact with the band director and at least go over tempo, if she was too busy to do that, she should have turned down the gig. If she was prevented from such contact and lipped it-'pre-recorded' should have scrolled on the screen.

I agree with just sing.  Just another fake thing, ie; Lance!  Although just on a minor scale but, still. Just disappointing I guess.

Who cares? Probably the tens of thousands of singers that did not get the opportunity to sing live at the inauguration.

I care that she butchered the anthem more than I care that she pulled the Milli Vanilli. Unfortunately she appeals to a large enough segment of the population to keep her popular.

I liked the Yo-Yo Ma one. I had never even considered the concept of "hand-syncing" before; pretty funny really.

Doesn't bother me one bit. These events are so orchestrated, for all we know the handlers told her they preferred it. Unbrainwash ye from the cult of celebrity, America. They aren't robots, but these big events are expected to run like machines. Also, good facts on other famous lip synching. That Whitney Houston one is very notable.

I want Milli Vanilli back. Since this is so widely acceptable, I don't see why they can't have a reunion tour. "Girl you know it's true...."

I don't think it's is an issue of Beyonce's voice being bad....she has proven herself a good singer, unassisted, on many occasions. But consider the pressure! Whole world's watching. I don't know; I don't have a problem with it. I reeaally think there's more interesting things to talk about following this inauguration, even if those interesting things are really just boring political things.

What a disgrace that a news organization published "We love you no matter what." Imagine the possibilities of "no matter what." Fine if RFT wants to go on record as not opposing lip-syncing in concerts, but "no matter what"? What if she turns out to be a mass murderer? Is the RFT still in love with her? What if she starts to claim she is an offspring of Bigfoot and space aliens? Still in love with crazy her? Save unconditional love for your children. Not some pretty girl filling your iPod.

She also faked her pregnancy, perhaps beyonce isn't even a real person.

I do! These people are singers,so sing! Are their voices that bad without studio help? I don't give a shit to see people fake it!

Beyonce is overrated. Who really cares if she lip synchs or not i don't know anyone more cheesy or mainstream. What a shocker that our dictator like president would have her sing. It's a complete joke just like Obama serving another 4 years.

Lol she totally sux, it's gonna haunt her forever...

So what is the point of having her, or anyone, get out in front of people and pretend to sing? If they pre-recorded it,and that's what they wanted us to hear, why not just play the recording? The point of seeing a singer live, is to hear them sing live.

Exactly don't we all have bigger things to worry about other than whether a washed up pop star lip synched????

Beyonce is soooo overrated. Most of her songs are repeating the same line over and over. But because she's black, married to Jay-Z and has become the new A-List entertainer, she's so important so influential. Ok.

Disgraceful, she brings shame to all of us

I could care less that she lip-synched. I DO care that she turned the National Anthem into a lounge-act piece.

Brian Boyd

Because she's a fraud. Her performances are lip synced and her recordings are auto-tuned. And to make it worse her husband sang a song "death to auto-tune." I guess he meant "death to auto tune for every one else but me"
