Kendrick Lamar is Coming to Chaifetz Arena April 17
Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar will be coming to St. Louis on Wednesday, April 17. Joining the critically-acclaimed rapper will be DJ Steve Aoki, founder of Dim Mak Records and an electrifying showman in his own right. Aoki is also nominated for a Grammy in this year's upcoming awards show, in the category of Best Dance/Electronica Album, for his latest effort Wonderland.
Kendrick's debut full-length, last year's Good Kid m.A.A.d. City, topped nearly every critic's list, and the young MC has been on fire lately between appearances on SNL and being named "Lyricist of the Year" at the 2012 BET awards. In a piece declaring m.A.A.d. City one of the most important hip-hop albums of our era, RFT Music's own Tef Poe had this to say:
I think we're witnessing a legitimate case of the hype machine getting it right. He can rap better than the average rapper. The West Coast has had hot and cold spurts within the last decade. Aftermath Records has always been a stronghold for new talent and has offered us plenty of game-changing moments that have helped the genre evolve and create new careers.
You have, in this case, a rapper who started out as a fan favorite on the Internet getting signed by Dr. Dre to release an album that has brought life back into not only the West coast but possibly hip-hop as a whole for the current moment. I think it's often difficult for us as fans nowadays to realize when we are actually witnessing history in the making.
Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. at METROTIX.COM. Check out the video for Lamar's "Swimming Pools" below.
