The man who today fell to his death down an elevator shaft has been identified by numerous sources close to RFT Music as Bob Reuter, 61, a legendary St. Louis music elder and beloved photographer who spent the majority of his life documenting and creating in the ever-blooming south-city scene.

Reuter was strong supporter of St. Louis arts, a DJ at KDHX (88.1 FM) and host of its Bob's Scratchy Records, and a mentor to many young local musicians. His bands the Dinosaurs, Kamikaze Cowboy and, most recently, Alley Ghost, were among the most revered acts in town.

Reuter was moving into a downtown loft when he fell to his death down an elevator shaft.

"I was his drummer, he was my best friend, we traveled the country together, played rock & roll," bandmate Bass Amp, who was on the scene when the tragedy occurred, told KSDK. "I lost it. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't believe it."

Much more information on his big, loud life and lasting influence coming soon, including tributes from Reuter's many friends and collaborators. Keep checking back at RFTMusic.com for updates.

What were Bob's first words to St. Peter? "Hey, can I pee in your mouth?!" Then he went on to tell him a joke that started with "Two n#ggers walked into a bar..." St. Peter was not impressed. And neither am I. Why are we glorifying this man? he hurt a lot of people - and didn't give a damn.

This song on here is terrible!

If the people who were his "friends" knew the stuff he said about them behind his back - especially his bandmates and the publisher of his last books - they wouldn't be rushing to immortalize him now. Bob was a narcissist who made racist jokes and was abusive to several of the women he got close to. He thought making fun of his ex-girlfriend's rape was hilarious and was more like a high school mean girl than a 60 year old man. Bob burned many of the people who tried to help him, both financially and emotionally. I saw him as someone who would treat you lovingly until there was nothing more he could squeeze from you, then he'd unceremoniously dump you for the next sucker. What happened to him is horrible and of course the building owner should be sued. No one should die like that. But Bob was no saint, and if this is who st. Louis puts up on a pedestal then this is one sick town. I know I'll get flamed for this, but there are quite a number of people who think the same way and don't have the balls to say it.

after the style of Bob,

fans, put your hand on the radio, now turn up the volume, turn it up and... and lay your broken heart on the radio...throw that speaker on the side and lay on it and turn it up or if it is your phone put it in your pocket and aim the speaker at your heart and be healed!

Awful. Just awful. His was my favorite show, next to Scene of the Crime, which no longer exists. I called him up at the station once to tell him how much I liked his show. I'm so glad I did.

Oh hell.  You were helpful, kind, patient and funny.  And now you're not.  You were right about the hat.

This is inaccurate. Please do further research and edit this story.

I had the biggest crush on him the years I lived in St. Louis that earned me a lot of teasing from the other regulars at Frederick's Music Lounge. RIP Bob, I will miss you.

So sad, I remember him from KDHX. I heard earlier about someone dying from a fall in an elevator shaft and just now saw the marquis at Vintage Vinyl saying R.I.P. Bob Reuter.... I never made the connection it was him. What a sad day for Saint Louis, indeed.

Very sad... As I was leaving my place around 3pm today, there were a couple ambulances and TV reporters near the rear of Copia. I heard what happened but didn't know who. RIP.

@NaturalMan All Bob's songs were terrible. If St. Louis weren't such a parochial town, Bob would have gotten nowhere.

@realslickusernameI have the balls to say it! Let's start with the kid who's taking care of his estate - Bob used to shake his head at the thought he'd willed stuff to him because he said "he makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit, why did I make him my executor?" but he didn't have anyone else he felt comfortable asking to handle his affairs. He'd pushed away most people he got close to. He told me Chris Powers was the only band member he had who knew how to play. These kids put out for him endlessly and he talked crap about them no end behind their back. Same with Erin who published his book. So tired of the "Reuter is a god" contingent. The man was a user and a perv as far as I could see.

@TransbayTitanIf it was your niece he was hitting on I dont think you'd be giving it a rest. Or erecting a statue to him, like the rest of St. Louis seems to be doing.

@sickI think Bob was the sick one, and the people who put him up on a pedestal. In the other RFT article someone refers to his perv tendencies -  but then goes on to talk about how fantastic he was. WTF? In any other town he'd be reviled as the pervert he was. He used his camera to manipulate and get sexual with too many lost young women. His relationship with Shanna over the years made me cringe and seeing all those kissy-poo photos of her with him on her FB page the last few days makes me want to throw up. Not to mention his old-fashioned misogyny and racism.

@janeyjones @realslickusername I don't even recognise the Bob I knew from all these glowing testamonials. The guy I knew was a mean, narcissistic a-hole user.  He went through people the way most folks go through toilet paper.

@faux_celeste @mpennek Nothing anymore- the story has been edited. There was information reported which, while slight, was leading to difficult conversations for me and people I work with during an already very difficult time.

I apologize if my previous comment came across as rude. That wasn't my intention.

@LouGehrig @leave Yup, Shanna needs to wake up. The love of her life (insert romantic photos of John and Yoko here) was a predator who sucked her in like he sucked in so many other sad young girls. Her allegiance to him is just pathetic.

@leaveActually, this is not a place for people who are mourning a death - it's a place for people to comment on a news article. There is another article written for people who are mourning Bob's death, and even that one is a news article by way of being in a newspaper (such as the RFT is) and anyone can make any comment they want to. Whether you liked Bob or not you have a right to express your opinion on this NEWS ARTICLE. What would be inappropriate on a private memorial page is not inappropriate here.

@leave I know Shanna, and that whole crowd, and yes, I know the exact nature of their relationship. His relationship with her, and with any other teenage girl he could get his hands on, was disgusting and perverted, and yes, he tried it on me, too. Gross asshole. And why is KDHX dedicating a room to a man who picked a fight with his fellow DJ and had to be forcibly separated from him? He was a violent, misogynist creep, and we're celebrating him? And if you've been anywhere outside of St. Louis and seen anything of the world, Bob's work doesn't look that great either.

@pyt6798 @sick this man has DIED: have some respect. if you didnt like him and dont have anything nice to say, why say anything at all? do you know shanna and the nature of their relationship? if not, why even look at her page if it makes you "so sick?" again: this is a place for people who are mourning a death. if you dont have anything to nice to share, dont share.
